Hello :-)
My friend and I are going to Milan, from May 28th-June 2nd!!!!
Flights booked but other than that not much else. I would love suggestions of CHEAPish places to stay (we are mature students and hostels would be ok) and what places must we see! We are flexible and would like to fit lots in on our trip.
Many thanks

Not been but am going in June too - I take it you took advantage of the recent ryanair promotion - which means you are flying into Milan (Orio al Serio) - you need to get a bus to the local train stn then a train into Milan. Once in Milan the metro (underground) is really very good and cheap. A 2 day unlimited pass is only 5.50 Euros (I think)

The last time we stayed at the Hotel san Francisco which was easily walkable into the city centre and only two stops from the main rail station. For the time you are staying there, it works out at about 90 euros a night for a twin room. We took a tourist tram around the centre which took a couple of hours but after La Scala and the Duomo, we weren't that struck on the city. What we did enjoy were the preplanned day trips by train, we went to Venice one day, simply stunning, Lake Como anothre day and Lugano in Switerland on another day, trains are cheap frequent and reliable, the exact opposite to the UK and Milan is the perfect place to explore. You could also get to Verona easily, we booked our tickets through Rail Europe in advance, very easy indeed.0

Try to see Michelangelo's The Last Supper in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church. You should also visit the the shopping arcade, Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle, which is a splendid building. Stresa on Lake Maggiore is another nice day trip easily done by train.
It's a while since I've been but Milan was the one place I felt under-dressed. I normally don't notice these things but when the Milanese came out for their stroll in the evening, they were very smart.0 -
If you wantto see the last supper, you really need to buy your ticket well in advance on the internet. They only let in maybe 20 people at a time for about 15 minutes, & the time slots are limited.
We went to a match at the San Siro, it was really cheap compared to football matches here. Again bought the tickets online.
The museums & parks are really nice, & of course theres the shopping.
We really enjoyed it, nice place.0 -
I would look at staying in Bergarmo and just having a day trip to Milan there is not that much to see.0

Is there a train station in Bergamo with links to the places mentioneD? Eg Lugano, Venice, Lake Garda/Coma etc.
If so are the trains cheap, easy to book and how long does it take to get to these places?
Many thanks

Hi,
I stayed near train station at hotel monople for 80 euros a night, good breakfast, buses take you straight to the centre by milan train station, approx 10 euros? from airport, there are a lot of bus companies there that go to the same place so you won't be lost. For cheaper shops you need to take a walk further from the main area where you will also find designer stuff but less disgusting in price. Plenty of fake designer bags etc everywhere too. The duomo is worth going to just for the views, the ice cream is also lush. There is a museum reachable by the cheap 5.50 euro two dayer ticket that has a lot of michaelangelo paintings and designs which while its not the last supper at least you will probably get to see it as the last supper sells out months in advance. It might be worth your while taking a trip out to venice or lake garda as the trains are really impressive service wise.0
