Is my boss being fair

I work in a very small engineering company manufacturing milled and turned parts for mainly local companies. I work with one other person and the boss, making three people. The boss normally is in and out all day and does not do a lot of machining but couple of days ago we were told that we would be on a 4 day week due to a lack of work coming in, this started as of yesterday. Today he was on the machine all day and was still doing so as we left to go home. As we have not got much work for the two of us to keep us going, surely this is totally unfair. What do you think.

He's probably trying to keep the company from going under.0

Well, he could make you redundant and do the work totally himself?
Yes, it's fair. It's called rationalisation...0 -
I imagine he is making sure he could do the job even if he had to make one of you redundant... times are hard! He may have no other choiceAchieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Sorry to say this but it is deemed fair - Demarcation effectively ended in the 70's.
The boss is making sure he still has the skills to run the company on his own or with only one employee if needed, though I do not doubt he like you, would prefer there to be enough work/money to not have to make any cuts.
The alternative may well be that the whole company closes. Tough times.Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0
