Cheapest car for insurance for 20 year old

My 20 year old son is taking a year out from his uni course for an industrial placement. He will have to live away from home and will also need a car to get to and from his job. SInce he won't have started being paid before he needs to have a car and somewhere to live he is on a pretty tight budget! H is researching buying a car for about £2,000 but the insurance costs are going to be high since he will still be classed as a student and has no no-claims bonus. Can anyone suggest a car which will a) be reliable at the sort of age he will have to buy for around £2,000 and b) relative cheap to insure?

For cheap insurance don't buy car that the boy racer type tend to drive and pimp up like nova, corsa, golf etc

Go for a small car <=1.4L, insurance group <5, look like it is for middle age people like a mazda 2 or 3. Whatever the car he buys, the insurance will be almost as much as his car worth. smthing like 1k-2k for a 21yo male students, 3rd party. Go with Quinn direct, they are cheap and don't charge u admin cost (or very little)

In the first coupe of years driving, I drove some old banger that cost like £200-£300 to buy, which have around 6 months MOT and TAX on it, drove it to the ground, sold it to recoup some money and carried on like that. It is cheaper than buy a £2k car, maintain it, MOT Tax, lost out on value of the cars.

I am currently driving a car that worth £300, 1.4L, quite economical and by the time I finish with it, will have 2 years NCB so I can move on and buy a proba car this time

I would agree with Hunken. Cut the budget for the car, buy something cheaper but reliable, learn to do basic servicing tasks on it, and save some of the money for what will undoubtedly be a hefty insurance premium. My 18 yo son has a Skoda Felicia. Nice little car, reliable and alot less than £2000. Happy hunting.
