Important announcement admin can you make this post sticky.
With effect from 1st April 2009 Corgi will cease to exist and will be replaced by the
gas safe register, any engineers working with gas in or on your property or anywhere else for that matter must by registered on the gas safe register and carry their id card to show this -
Further info can be found at http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/
You will be able to find a local engineer using the site by searching by postcode, town name etc, if you use the advanced search option you can specify the type of work they need to offer to suit your needs.
The site also lets you check they are registered by typing in their id number.
Finally a nice touch is that the site has photo's of the engineers on there too as an added security check for you.

pushing to top of forum as very important information for gas usersI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

Am suspicious of WHY they changed the name.
What else has been changed. Is it easier for the gas engineers to register, is it harder, was the Corgi system open to abuse. If it's going to cost a legitimate gas man extra money guess who pays.0 -

It's not just the name - Corgi was an organisation on its own, the GSR is, I believe, operated by Capita.
The government felt that CORGI had their fingers in too may pies - they were also responsible for safety and standards in other sectors, like electricity and plumbing.
Full details are here: http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/default.aspx
With regard to the cost - I couldn't get a clear answer from the website but it's around £4 - £8 per week, and of course they presumably won't have to pay for CORGI membership anymore.
Hope that helps
EDIT: The costs for GSR are lower than CORGI http://www.capita.co.uk/media/Pages/There'sanewnameingassafetyandit'snotCapita.aspxLife should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.0 -

According to CORGI, the running of the register was put out to tender and Capita won.
Presumably meaning Capita paid more to the HSE for the right to run it.
(or otherwise offered to run it for less)...EDIT: The costs for GSR are lower than CORGI http://www.capita.co.uk/media/Pages/There'sanewnameingassafetyandit'snotCapita.aspx

So with 2 lots of membership fees the engineers will now be paying out, guess who'll be footing the bill...Cost of registering
Online registration will cost one hundred and fifty three pounds plus VAT
If you are not registering online it will cost you one hundred and seventy five pounds plus VAT, which is cheaper than the one hundred and seventy nine pounds previously charged by CORGI
Cost for an additional operative fifty two pounds plus VAT
For notification of work under building regulations the charge will be two pounds online and three pounds by phone
Capita has noted that these costs should reduce over time. Although they have mentioned that they will be recouping the costs of their publicity campaign from future membership fees and we cannot gauge the cost increase as Capita are not going to disclose ho much the consumer campaign will cost"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
either way I forsee a hell of lot of confusion for consumersI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0

Good afternoon: See here for info on new regime for gas safety. The OH has registered with the Gas Safe Register and has been a member of the CIPHE for many years but will not be renewing with CORGI: I suspect many RGIs won't be either.

Capita are just a re-incarnation of CORGI. Many of the CORGI staff simply got TUPE'd to CORGI so its just the same old game but with a different name.
The on line gassaferegister is a good idea but it is also a gross invasion of privacy IMHO.
Let us not forget that RGIs are individual human beings too, with families and private lives and yet this outfit have taken it upon themselves to publish personal data and photos of individuals on a global website without even asking their permission.
Why is it that gas engineers are so tightly regulated and yet do we have an on line data base complete with photos of for example, doctors, surgeons, lawyers, dentists, and all other manner of professions?? No we dont, and why? because I'll wager that these "professionals" would object most veciferously and further, it is automatically assumed and it is recieved wisdom that such "professionals" once qualified, are above reproach and are deemed qualfied for life.
Contrast this with gas..oh no,they are all scamsters and cannot be trusted. We must tightly regulate them and make lots of money out of them by propagating mass hysteria about gas safety and Carbon monoxide.
The truth is that gassaferegister is purely a registration body,a money making machine. It is not their job to police bad practice but will simply refer such matters to HSE for their consideration.
HSE often dont follow up such matters unless there has been death or serious injury.
In addition, the public are fooled into a false sense of security by thinking that simply becuase someone is registered, they are competent.
This is far wide of the mark !
The only real benefit i see is that it tightly protects the Gas Engineering industry and puts blockers in the way of new entrants, thus preserving the livelihood of those already in the business0 -
Ah, Crapita, the Gorgon. Why if it was not broke, do we need the Gorgon to fix it!0
