Cancelled car insurance - money owing question/help!

Hi guys,
Im looking for some advise. I cancelled my car insurance in Jan because my lovely car died! I asked at the time how much I would be charged and was told by the advisor that they couldnt tell me because it is worked out on a daily basis. They said they would wait for the letter and then advise me if I owed anything. Anywho Ive not heard anything since and my Direct Debits stopped coming out of my account.
I received a letter yesterday from the finance company to say I owed money and had to pay. It was from a debt recovery type company. Now if I owe the money I have no problem paying it but it works out that I have paid more for cancelling than I would have if I carried paying for the next 5 months. I am also a bit annoyed that this demanding letter was the first letter Ive received. Is this the norm? Should I have received a letter from the insurer to advise how much I owed? How do I know if they are charging me correctly?
Some details -
Bought insurance through Express Insurance
Actual insurer - Southern Rock
Paid by - monthly direct debit
Total insurance cost - 558.02
Tptal paid by me- 413.7
Amount they say I now owe - 192
Cancelletion charge £50
Does this look right? Should I ask questions or should I just pay?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you claim on your insurance? If so, you are liable for the whole year's payment. If not, then you are usually OK to cancel the policy.
You should definitely ask questions. I would ring the number on your policy and keep talking until you get some proper answers. It does seem very poor.0
