Dodgy motor

My father bought a car about 6-9 months ago from a dealer, it only cost around 3k and was most likely a part exchange to clear. Its a 51 reg mondeo. However in last couple of months it has been ridden with problems. Problems with the valves and cylinders meant repairs of 1k has already been spent on it. And now a similar problem means that the engine will probably need to be replaced.

I have 3 points that i would like advice on:
  • I doubt we have any comback from the dealer we bought it from
  • Would you advice scrapping the car and getting a new vehicle
  • Or fixing it up again and hope thats the end of the problems
Thanks

First question, how many miles has it done?

Not a lot of miles really then.

Trouble with fitting a second hand engine is can you be sure it's going to be any better than the one you're taking out?

We run the policy now we will only fit a second hand engine if supplied by the customer, as two faulty second hand engines we sourced for the same vehicle cost us thousands. And then ended up buying a new unit.

Our crime was trying to save the customer a few quid.

    It's crystal balling I'm afraid.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
