Best Current Account for OH?

Hi,
I'm trying to find the best account for my husband. He currently has a Step Account with Nat West. He is a non EU citizen and doesn't have permanent residency here until September. We are married so there will be no problem with this.
His employer will only pay him cash in hand, and I'm presuming this is the reason Nat West have refused his upgrade to the Current Plus Account. He has never had any credit problems, has had a Nat West CC for a few years and managed it well and currently owes zero. When he gets his wages each week, he pays some of them into the account straight away.
All DDs and mortgage payments etc, come out of my account. Does anyone know an account that might offer him a better deal so he can get a debit card (rather than just Solo)?
Nat West have treated him appalingly on several occasions, one of which I witnessed when a member of staff spoke to him like he was stupid just because English isn't his first language. When I spoke up and she realised I spoke English, she looked shocked.
I have just taken on our first mortgage (which had to be in my name only), and I want to switch to another current account myself (online). I have a Nat West Current Plus myself.
I really want to leave Nat West and their awful staff behind.
Thanks for any help,
Precious.

Hi, Im sorry for the way they treated you I use to work there and I can understand where your coming from since I left due to there service simply not been good enough.
How long as he had the step account? They normal require a min of 6 months before they will consider an upgrade but prefer a year.
Not to defend Natwest but they do have people that are there to help, If your willing to try get this sorted I would consider calling the phone banking and asking to speak to the customer care team who deal with all complaints.
Now because your not named on your husbands account it will be hard for them to help you but I think its in your best intrests to let them know how he has been treat and that you are considering moving banks.
Please let me know how you get on.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 0650 -
Thanks a lot for your response.
He has had the Step Account for over a year. He has asked for a Current Account, and was initially told to bring in 6 months pay slips and that this would suffice to open the account. He took them in and was refused by someone else.
One of the problems is, that I don't see most of this and because English isn't his first language, he may have misunderstood bits of what they said and vice versa. However, what I know he is not mistaken about, it their attitude to him on several occasions, as I said previously.
I presumed it was because his wages were not being paid directly into his bank account that he had been refused the CA. I don't see why it should be, as he has no credit problems and has managed the account well. They can see by one and a half years wage slips that he has a regular income.
I will try phoning the bank as you suggested.
I'll let you know, and thanks again for your help.

Your welcome even though I don't work for them anymore I try help there customers out

One thing I would advise you, when calling is don't say you want to discuss your partners account because they will simply say you can't as it will break data protection and you wont get very far.
Explain you have a complaint regarding (insert branch) and wish to take it up with the customer care team as a formal complaint.
Once your through security they should transfer you to the care team, which is when you need to get things investigated. Now if they can't get through to the customer care team don't let them transfer you to the branch!
You won't get through either insist on talking to a team leader or you can get the care team to call you which must be within 2 working hours and the care team work until 8pm.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 0650
