Opening up a loft hatch???

I currently have a loft hatchway which is approx 1 foot by 2 foot. I would like to open it up to 2 x 2 foot, as I plan to board the loft and make it suitable for storage. I think it will involve cutting across a joist/beam. Is this a big job? any idea of cost?? The previous owner said £150 but dunno where he got that figure from???

The previous owner was about right I'd say. I had my loft hatch enlarged last year & a new hinged cover fitted for it & it cost me about £160. I didn't have mine widend though, just lengthend. The opening is about 2' x 2' 8" now which is perfect, especially for getting bulky items through.
I had a qualified carpenter to do mine & it was a messy job with part of the ceiling needing to be cut away & of course part of the joist. I also had him top up the insulation in my loft & board it out for me, but of course I paid a lot more for that to be done. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
That seems a bit steep to me, but it depends where you live!
There is not that much work involved, you can see how much here-
Making a loft hole
I'd estimate about 3 hours work including making the new loft hatch as well!0 -
really is not a difficult job, good DIY manual will tell you all you need, good luck.0
