Combining/Switching Help For A Newbie...

Options
Hi!

Longtime lurker, first time poster. I kind of need a bit of help with utilities if anybody would be so kind as to help me out? My girlfriend and I have just moved into rented place together and I'd like to combine the gas and electric for the sake of convenience/cheapness. I've found some decent deals on Uswitch, but I was just wondering how I go about informing the other companies that the previous tenants were using I would be switching. The place is currently with N Power for electricity and British Gas for gas. If I went with Scottish Power for both, would they then get in touch with N Power and British Gas to inform them they were taking over the supply so I would just pay the outstanding amount on the accounts?

Hope this doesn't come across as too dumb a question - I figured this would be the best place to ask about this kind of stuff.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

You need to contact the existing suppliers to tell them you have taken over the accounts from the previous tenant. You will have deemed contracts with them until any switch, and a switch will take at least 4 weeks.

If you decide to switch, the new supplier will arrange that for you once you have applied.

It's worth contacting both new & old suppliers with a meter reading on the day the switch actually takes place (the new supplier will inform you when this will be) to avoid any dispute, but again you dont have to contact both; either the existing or the new supplier will pass that reader to the other.

After the switch, the old suppliers will send you bills for the energy used in the meantime.
