Trouble with multi-format removable storage device

Rather than use the camera's battery to transfer pics to the hard disk, I use a removable device. Hitherto it has worked excellently and they had become visible immediately, so the files could be sent or copied over.
Recently for another problem the computer was reformatted and a clean install done, but before that is automatically taken as the root of the problem I'm meeting, I'd like other suggestions.
The problem:
Whereas it loaded immediately, I now get a box telling that Autoplay is finding (and presumably loading) the several drives for the device. It's very slow and sometimes not all drives load. When they do all load and I click on the drive for the picture card's type. The program is again slow and hangs, but eventually I get "please insert a disk". No matter if a card is in or inserted/reinserted.
Could the fault lie with the removable device, or even the camera, a new Canon Ixus 80 I bought for the wife?
System is XP Home SP3

When you say 'removable device' do you mean a card reader? If so, did it come with any drivers, and have they been installed?Stompa0

I was about to make that clarification. Honest:D Yes a memory card reader. Actually I got it from a relative's firm, unused but surplus to requirements. No drivers were with it, but as said in the OP it has hitherto worked perfectly on the XP drivers.0 -
Are you able to transfer pictures directly from the camera?Stompa0

No problem with camera transfers0

Are you able to try the card reader in another PC?
Or perhaps try plugging it in to another USB port (maybe a rear one)?Stompa0 -
depending on where you got your XP disc from, it may oy may not have the right drivers.
download driver genius, plug the drive in, run driver genius and install all updated drivers (back up old ones first).0 -
Err!
A post I made with quotes of and replies to stompa and tomsutton529 have vanished, but no matter. I think I may have solved the thing, from a thread elsewhere on a somewhat similar problem. The card for reading is a SDHC and not all older readers recognise them, and also the same readers' have capacity limitations.I put a low capacity SD in and it loaded a dream. 0 -
