start button flashing

For the past couple of days when I try to use the start button it flashes and wont stay on so I cant access control panel, shut down etc. It does it all the time now and I am really bewilldered, can anyone shed any light on this for me? I use Vista home premium on a new dell laptop with wifi connection, it does stay on as normal after about 10 attempts.

frugalmacdugal - thanks for trying but none of these steps seemed to help - mine dosnt flash at odd times just when I click on it - it happens about 90% of the time, its like its not ready to stay on, this didnt happen at first and I've only had the laptop a week! Very strange indeed - anymore suggestions are welcome.

Id guess INFECTION or CONFLICTING SOFTWARE

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

  • i would contact where you bought it from and return it as the problems range from bad RAM to a faulty PSU and Faulty MOBO,

somethings to try are swap the RAM around if it has 2 sticks in or try to boot with just one stick in... the ram will be under a small cover on the under side of the laptop.

The dell laptops do have some design flaw in them and this could be something quite complicated.
