Tulip/Bulb Field Trip to Amsterdam

Hi all,

I want to surprise my mum by booking her a holiday to Amsterdam to visit the tulip/bulb fields this season. Has anyone been before? When is the best time to go? If you have been, are there any recommended companies I should target to book a trip for between 4-7 days?

Cheers,

darkfibre

We went to the bulbfields a few years ago and they are amazing. you get the train from Amsterdam central ato Haarlem and then it is a short bus ride. The park is massive and there are also special exhibitions but well worth a day out from Amsterdam. We just stayed in the city and went for the day very easily. The tourist office are excellent and they will be able to help

Tulips could well be late this year due to the cold winter............However youve left it a bit late.........Middle of April to late april usually.
  • I took Mum the first week in May, just a few weeks before Keukenhof closed. My abiding memory was just how cold it was, with no hills the wind just whsitles across the fields. Although Mum is an avid gardener, I have to say she was quite disappointed and much prefered her holiday to Bruges the previous year for her 80th birthday.

I lived near the Keukenhof for a couple of years a long time ago and the first year was fantastic - sunshine all the way and beautiful displays. My parents came over at the right time to visit and loved it too.

Went again with my mother last year for a few days, staying in Amsterdam and spent a day at the Keukenhof but it was freezing, very windy, and started to rain very heavily so it's just your luck.

We got the train from Amsterdam to Leiden then one of the special buses laid on from there. You can buy tickets at the airport tourist information office, or any of the other ones but make sure it includes the bus.

Another thing to watch out for is Queens Day on 1st May when the whole city of Amsterdam shuts down - no transport except the trains. No traffic is allowed in the centre because of all the activities and stalls so be careful where you choose to stay. The Hague is lovely too and doesn't close down so could be an option.
