Help please! Concert at Slane Castle / weekend in Dublin - where to stay?

Hello, I've had a search but not really found what I need so would really appreciate some advice please....
My boyfriend and I have tickets for the Oasis concert at Slane Castle in June and would really like to make a weekend of it. I understand the Castle is in Co Meath but think they are running buses to and from Dublin for the gig (?). Having never visited Dublin I'd like to stay there but am unsure whereabouts would be best or whether we'd actually be better off staying somewhere nearer the Castle and just travelling into Dublin (although not sure how practical this would be).
We have two nights and are flying with Ryanair from Luton to Dublin.
Any views or recommendations please?
Many thanks
Laura

First things first, you will not be staying in Dublin.
You have 2 options, 1 is Drogheda which is 15 minutes from Slane. There's quite a few hotels in the area and to be honest you'll find the same craic there as in Dublin, in fact probably better. I live there.
But access to Drogheda from the concert is difficult, you will most likely walk over 1 hour to find a cab or bus back into town.
The best option for you is Donore. This is 5 minutes from Slane. There is 2 places to stay Newgrange Lodge (€30 a nite) and Daly's B & B. Donore is a small village and is a 7 minute ride into Drogheda and about €10 in a cab. There is also a bus which stops outside the lodge. So on your 1st night or so you can still access the town and make it back to your hotel no problem. After the concert you will find it much easier to find your way back to Donore, plus there is a grand pub in the village which I'd imagine would stay open till the wee hours.
If you stay in Donore you will need to walk from the concert and make your way down the hill signposted Dublin/Ashbourne, you then cross the river via the bridge and up a hill but at the top of this hill it's only a 3-4 min ride to Donore so you should pick up a ride easier.
Other options are b & b's on the ashbourne rd which links Dublin to Slane. You choose, Dublin is def out of the equation.
Drogheda is about a 25 mins bus ride from the Airport. If there is anything else you wanna know, just ask0 -
Thanks Slainte, that's very useful. When you say that Dublin is out of the equation, do you mean completely or just in terms of actually staying there? i.e. If we stayed in Donore or Drogheda how easy would it be to get into Dublin for the day to visit?
Actually, Donore is out as both those places are full!
Will look into Drogheda.... and into those special buses to the concert from Dublin as I'm sure I read that somewhere....

That's quite unfortunate that both places are booked.
Staying in Drogheda and visiting Dublin for the day isn't an issue, it's 30 minutes on the bus and the same by train, bout €10 on either.
You'll find it hard enough to get back to Drogheda after the concert let alone Dublin. You might wanna try the Marriot hotel in Ashbourne, it's about 10 minutes into the city from there and about 15 minute bus ride to Slane, it's one road the whole way from the Hotel to Slane Castle, it might be easier to get to there after the concert. That's only speculation though.
You won't get into a club in Drogheda after the concert, there is only 3 clubs. So if that's a priorty it prob won't happen.
It's really your call, I'm not going to put you totally off staying in Dublin but just be aware of the difficulty you will have trying to return to there on the night of the concert. You'll be tired, because u gotta walk up one mighty big hill coming out of Slane, it's way down in a valley and after bopping all day it's going to take it's toll on you. When you exit the area you will then have to walk for what we seem forever to reach the outer boundaries, taxis and buses arent allowed within a few mile radius. One year I had to walk the whole way back into Drogheda, prob 2 hour walk.
For the day of the concert and evening before Drogheda is def the place to be, McPhails pub is the place for you to go so if you opt to stay in Drogheda, def visit there the night before and morning of the concert. Best of luck, don't hesitate in sending a PM if you have any questions whatsoever. :hello:0 -
