I have recently purchased the sony DSC-P93 which has enough features for a beginner/intermediate user. I suggest you visit https://www.steves-digicams.com which has in depth reviews of the sony range.
For purchasing I used https://www.pixmania.com for the camera,(try promo code CAMERABUYER1204 or DPUSER1204 for £10 off(numbers represent monthyear and can be changed as required), code supplied by someone else on this site I think, many thanks). For the memory stick I used ebuyer and selected the Sandisk version of memory stick pro.
Also try code pcpro-smon-losg-izbv on pixmania until 19th Dec. provided by BABBLER.

Great thanks for your advice. I want a good camera for when i go on Safari so if i have to spend a few extra £ to get a much better camera then im wiling to do it.0

Does it have to be a Sony? For a safari, I imagine a good optical zoom (more than 5 times, say) will be particularly useful. Sony do make high zoom cameras, but they tend to be expensive (£450 upwards).
How about the Canon Powershot S1 IS? It has a high power zoom (10x), takes standard AA batteries (easy to buy almost anywhere, or rechargeables can be charged from 12 volt supply on vehicle), and has an image stabilizer. It costs £279.99 from Amazon , but may be available cheaper elsewhere.
You will have some change left from £300 to buy a large capacity memory card. You can find a review of the Canon S1 here at Steve's Digicams.People are more important than things0 -
Hi totally agree with cc25 with a but…….
£200 – 300 camera offer good point and shoot are portable and they are good for “quck pics” anything that needs zoom or fast action shoots the it really is hit and miss.
I want to fairford military air show this year with my sony – ok this is the extreme and it got some nice pics but if you going on a safari that may be once in a life time you want a good battery live – takes most memory cards – good shot time ( no lag ) and good zoom be nice.
Personally ( just upgraded ) I got the cannon EOS300D and while its not every body bag “ got it with the £100 cash back and memory card for 430 “ and the body is a bit plastic it an awesome piece kit.
My advice go have a play in a shop ( if it quiet and not rammed ) see what you like and then buy it from – amazon – 7dayshop.com or use any the online codes in the forum to get a bargain.
Happy huntingTell it as it should be....0 -
kewl, having read a few reviews and seen your comments over the past 2 days i've decided it doesnt have to be a sony camera.
Ill certainly take your advice on board and go play around in one of the local camera stores because as u rightly say it will be a once in a lifetime experience.
wish u all a merry chrismas and thanks again0 -
Guys,
spent about 2hrs in stores today getting additional advice on the cameras and am considering the Canon PowerShot S500.
2 of the stores i went into suggested this would be an ideal camera and having read the reviews it seems fairly good. However not being any expert or anything am still not 100% confident its the one i want.
What do you guys think? is there any major flaws with this model?0 -
Get a beer and read this:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/S500/S50A.HTM
I am not an expert but like any camera in its class its small and has tradeoffs to keep it small.
You still going to have to factor in - spare battery - more memory - case to keep the metal body scratch free
If you do buy this DONT buy it from the high street put it the make and model in google and check it through the cost comparsions sites.
This is a usefull site:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/index.php
So once you find the website to buy from you can use the above link and see any usefull - discounts codes or free delviery.
One other thing - if you buy it on a barclays credit card and you find it cheaper after purchase they refund the diffrence back ;DTell it as it should be....0 -
If you do have you heart set on a sony - this was on another post in the forum which i was nearly tempted to buy.

With the 100 you save that buy more memory / battery / case !!!!!!! ::)Tell it as it should be....0
