Grabbing DVD clips

Does anyone know if it is possible to "grab" clips from DVDs? I have moved most of my home video stuff across to DVD and want to grab clips to merge with others and make other DVDs.

Not been able to find any stuff to do this... any advice appreciated... tx

  • Thanks for the post Cargo. Have you actually used this software to "grab" clips? I'm not sure what I want to grab is MPEG... the DVDs are actually the same (DVD/R???) as the ones you buy in the shops... if I load one into my PC DVD and look with explorer I just see a VIDEO-TS folder with some .VOB and .BUP files.

    Appreciate your assistance... :)
  • Bertie - I use software that you can get for free on t'net to do mine - DVD Decrypter, VirtualDub, then TMPEGEnc. They work like this:

-DVD Decrypter rips the VOB file to your hard drive (takes a few minutes)
-VirtualDub converts the VOB file to a .d2v file and an audio file (takes a few minutes)
-TMPEGEnc converts the .d2v and audio files into an MPG - but it lets you specify a small portion of it to transfer (takes about 3 times the length of the video to convert)

VirtualDub also allows to you to convert only a small part of the VOB if you like - I've never tried grabbing the clip like that...

Not used it myself, but VOB2MPG is meant to be quick and easy for getting your .VOB files to .MPG, to allow re-authoring.

As cargo says, Womble MPEG-VCR is the best tool by far to use. This is because it does frame accurate editting and not to the nearest GOP as most software tends to do. A 'time-limited' download is available from the Womble website

If such accurate editting is not required then you can just call up MS MovieMaker (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>) - assuming your on XP - and use its 'split movie' functions.

Once you have re-authored your clips, you will need to reauthor the Video_TS files, c/w any menus you need and then burn the DVDs.

I use DVD-Lab Pro, but this is commercial software - not sure on the current best freeware for this job is, but a good start is the Videohelp Authoring (DVD) List. Sorted by type so the first several are freeware.

For more info, you are best looking at the Videohelp.com - Guides pages, and/or the Doom9.org pages.

Thx mr j for backing me up on that.
Didnt know it was the best but I have used it to grab clips from your vob files and save as mpegs.
Also I used it to join mpegs together as it lets you preview your work.
Then usually use tmpg enc author to make dvd.

Post how you get on m8.
Allways good to see how things go.
  • To all of you who contributed... many many thanks!

I have the answers and the capability.
