Never had a credit card - If I don't use it do I get charged?

Hello,
I don't know the rules and only require a credit card for emergency situations. Is there a standard charge just for having a credit card? If I don't end up using it will I still be charged a fee. Is there a one time charge say for applying and getting a card or even if applying and being refused?
Thanks for any info.
Ian

most cards don't have a fee for having one - just for using it and not paying it off at the end of the month - check the small print though -

As littleredhen said, it's rare for a fee to be charged but it's usually stated in the T&C's;)

Also, if you do not use the card at all, the bank might withdraw the card after a while or reduce your credit limit significantly.

After all, they have given you a limit of £ xxx (put a certain sum of money aside for you to use it) and if you don't use the card (and makethem any money), they might be better off, offering that limit to someone else, who will use the dosh.
