Could you put a stair gate on the door in the kitchen when visitors are there... he can see and hear whats going on but still away from them?
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

He wouldn't be able to see us from the kitchen through to the lounge. Also my family is terrified of dogs, and wouldn't be happy with a stair gate only between him and them. He might try to jump over it as well (he is big), although I doubt that as he doesn't have any escaping tendencies.

It's strange, he ripped his bed again last night, so I really think he doesn't like the vet bed.
When I got down this morning at 6am (he would normally be all snuggled and look at me like "what you doing up at this time mum?"), he was walking around and he had pulled the vetbed out of the plastic bed all together and torn it. Weird.
I think we might give up and let him sleep on the sofa. He sometimes comes up there fore a cuddle anyway and loves it. It is leather so no probs with hairs. If he ever does sleep on there he dozes all morning cos he's so comfy.
Then when people come round I can put him in the spare bedroom where there is carpet for him to lay on.

I wonder if a little mate would keep him more occupied so he doesnt think about ripping things up?

Sadly, however much I would love another one, he has dog agression, so it wouldn't possible! Thanks for the suggestion though.
He doesn't normally think about ripping stuff up, just his bed, bizzarely! It's quite funny when you think about it! I leave my expensive shoes, scarfs, bags etc within his reach when we are out and he wouldn't dream of touching them!
I think it's because he has been taught to only touch what is his. Maybe he thinks "it's my bed and I shall rip it if I want to!"
