Need to copy tape cassettes to CD

Options
Not sure if this is the right place, but will post here anyway. I have a lot of cassette tapes, (dating from when my car was regularly broken into for its CD player and tapes were a safer option.) I now want to transfer them to CD and or MP3 player but the cassette drive on my home stereo is kaput.

Can anyone recommend a stereo unit with a tape cassette player and CD built in which is of reasonable quality and includes an option to copy to a CD (I have tried using a separate tape cassette player and plugging it into my PC but can't get it to work. In any case I would like to do the copying separate from my PC).

Technical spec for Sony CMTEH45DAB micro system says it has no digital input or output? It has CD and cassette players but I assume it means you can play CDs or cassettes - but how would I transfer contents of cassette onto CD?
  • if your casette player has a phono connector on it you should be able to connect it to your pc with a lead and record it to the pc then put to disc

I used an old Sony Walkman to do this - just connect the headphone output on the Walkman to the Line-in on the PC

Have tried connecting cassette player headphone output to line in on PC. Nothing. Do I need some special software as well?
