Should I stay or should I go???

I'm currently with Talktalk for landline and broadband and the costs are going up all the time. What started off as looking as a good deal is now costing us nearly £50 a month and that supposedly includes all free calls except 0870 and mobiles of which we very rarely call.

There is a short period coming up that means I can cancel my 18 month contract with them and incur no penalty, my question is thus...

I am not going to get a better deal off them for landline and the broadband has gone up to £12.99 per month because we are not on an LLU exchange (BT are the operators). BT are able to offer for 3 months the whole package that TT currently give me for half the price... what would folk recommend here? Are BT worth going back to? Any other really hot deals around now? Any advice appreciated...

Thank

But what happens after 3 months with BT? To do a valid comparison you need to work out the total costs over the contract period amd compare that way.
Unfortunately if there are no LLU operators on your exchange then prices are likely to be pretty similar across the board. TalkTalk have increased their phone prices but then BT are also increasing their line rental too.

thanks for your reply, do you know how much BT's prices are going up? I was looking into their unlimited landline and the most basic broadband. Their price I was given for all that over the phone was £32 after the initial 3 months compared to the £46 a month we're paying TT now. I have got a measley £2 a month off and a discount on mobile calls but that's it... there must be something better out there... Yes, our broadband exchange is a bit of a pain but we'll have to live with that...

If you are talking about BT Broadband Option 1, plus Unlimited Anytime, that will cost you £31.64 after the introductory period. Then your line rental on top is £11.25. Total £42.89.
Are you paying TT £46 exclusive of line rental? In which case, what tarrif is this, as it sounds very expensive!

First thing to do is make sure 100% you are not on Talk Talk LLU ( cancel and face reconnection charges if you are LLU) If your in a low LLU prescence area then low cost deals are few and far betweeen. the bt deal is ok it is a bit less than quoted as line rental is £12.50 btbb is £15.65 and anytime calls is £4.85 so it £33.00 in total. there are cheaper deals but depends what you want from your suppliier. as other companies do same but with free international calls or free mobile calls. if not BT then post office seem the cheapest non llu supplier. also virgin if you have cable.

Yeah I would check out Virgin Media, they do a fantastic job installing and no dish etc, their staff are very friendly and you get easy online access to your account. Their packages are great, especillay if you include a telvesion package, you can get all 3 for around £40 if their the basic options. Plus you can get a mobile contract with free phone and 100min/texts for £8.50 if you take out above deal. Just be clear of contract terms as sure it was 12 months when signed up and later turned out to be 18, which was annoying as wanted to move.

    Thanks for your replies...

No the £46 a month with TT is inclusive of line rental. The BT option 1 and unlimited anytime price I was quoted was £32 inclusive of everything according to the sales rep as I asked him three times to confirm that was all... maybe he was wrong...

As for the LLU, apparentely no other ISP has services on our exchange. Does that mean that all other ISP's broadband prices will be the same if not more expensive than BT?

We're currently on TT Talk international... we never make international calls but make daytime calls far more than we make evening or weekend calls.

I've had a look at the Virgin site and it was probably me but I couldn't find a package that was 'talk anytime' but a low download broadband (we don't download much).

    regards, molezak

BT price for bundle of Broadband Option 1 and Unlimited Anytime Calls is £29.31+ line rental £10.50 (latter is increasing to £11.25 on 1/4). So that's £40.56. Bear in mind this is an 18m contract.
I don't think your BT rep can have been including line rental...
Are you in a Virgin Media cabled area? If so they can do 'L' broadband (up to 10MB) and 'XL' calls (Unlimited Anytime) for £31.95 plus £11 line rental.Total £42.94.
Between TT and BT, if your exchange has no LLU operators then you are going to pay the same line rental, and a similar amount for broadband, since it is a BT wholesale service. Unless TT can offer you a better calls deal then BT will be a bit cheaper.
Since the difference is marginal, (£2.50 a month) and if you're happy with their service, why not ask TT to match the BT price or else say you will be leaving? And to throw in a wireless router or some other sweetener with it for your loyalty?

Hi molezak! I have read you post. The correct charges for BT Broadband Option 1 (after the initial 3 months) and Unlimited Anytime calls are £33.10 and include line rental . You can get a further discount of £1.25 by paying by direct debit and registering for paperfree billing .

In that case I suggest you talk to the guys who write your website. The link below clearly states that after 3 months the rate is £29.41+£11.25 line rental: total £40.66.

And what's the point of highlighting the '3 month' rate on an 18 month contract? It's about time ISP's stopped doing this as it is deliberately misleading.

  • over half an hour ago, I received a call from TalkTalk saying I could not switch to a different provider since I was under contract, and so would incur a fee of up to £70. I asked for proof of this contract, which I have always refused to take out. She then transferred me to Samashni, OV4, who said I was under contract till July, but could provide no proof, and suggested I cancel or incur charges of up to £70. I asked to make a complaint, and got Mbali who said I would be charged up to £120 and finally gave specifics, saying there is no contract and no charge.
I wish to complain at this shoddy treatment of customers, which is precisely why I am so keen to leave TalkTalk. This last operative has left me hanging on for lengthy periods while she finally, inaccurately, logs my complaint.
