There's a larder cupboard in our hall that has a large airbrick to the outside. It's covered in wire mesh. I'm assuming it was intended as a food store cupboard.

Since the colder weather has begun, I've started getting a smell from this cupboard. It reminds me of when we had a hamster and it's cage needed cleaned out.

I've cleaned the cupboard out and there's no sign of mice droppings or even chewed food come to that, but the smell isn't going away. There's nothing outside that smells this way so I don't think it's coming in through the airbrick.

Is it possible that there might be mice in the walls and I'm smelling thier urine through the numerous cracks there are in this place?

Failing that, I'm at a loss to know what's causing the smell.
I always think that wherever you get mice, you see droppings, you just can't not.
Try the traps, or let us know how you got on, but I don't think it's mice in there.

I just went into the bedroom and got the shock of my life when something ran down the curtains and across the room. Did you hear my scream?? It went under the wardrobe. Pointless trying to hunt around at this hour and I have to sleep there! Will have to get traps etc tomorrow. On having a good look round I've seen what could be one mouse dropping.
I have an electronic device which does work. Going to plug it in near the bed. And I have one humane trap which I've baited with meat on the landing.

Right so last night and the night before we were kept awake by scratching sounds in the attic. We moved down to the living room to sleep on the sofas last night and, there was scratching noises coming from inside the living room wall!!!
Obviously we have rats or mice (I think rats as the scratching sounded very loud/powerful).
What I would like to know is which type of traps are the most effective? I don't want to use poison as I have 4 dogs (including a Bedlington terrier who is scared of rats!!) Are those 'Little Nipper' traps effective? Can you reset them so that they can be used several times? Also I've heard that chocolate is good bait-is that right?

    Thanks.
  • euch, a new family seems to have moved into my airing cupboard! Lots of comfy bedding to keep them warm.
any suggestions? I bought a couple of those ultra sonic plug in things when I had mice in my kitchen which seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately no-where to plug it in in the bathroom. Don't want to use traps; I dont necessarily want to kill them, I would just rather they moved house!
    any suggestions?

  • Just looking for some advice really. Just bought a house (built 2003) removed plinth from undera range oven and found two little bowls of poison from Rentokil, what I think are two traps and a fake plastic mouse. From the state of the oven I can see the previous occupants (the house was tenanted for 4 years) were not clean at all. I'm petrified of mice and this has got me really worried. Is there any way of finding out if they are still present? I know I could lay traps but Im worried the food on the traps may just attract them back if they've already gone! Any advice would be appreciated.

Must be a worry for you
You could try a sonic plug in repellant - about £11 in Wilko

Waste of money in my experience :o

The only thing I found worked was the poison which they normally take back to share with their friends eventually eradicating them. I'm petrified of the little beggars too and it sounded like they were under my en-suite bath having a party!

If the little food bowls under there haven't been disturbed, I think you can safely assume they no longer live there though :)

Problem with poison is that the mice can die in places where you can't remove their bodies and thi8s can lead to smells, plus it will attract flies.

I have found the best solution is the old style 'snap' traps that kill them instantly. Smear the trap with a little bit of peanut butter as this encourages them to get on to the trap to set it off. if you use too much, they are crafty and get it without activating the trap.

you can normally smell mouse pee, and you see little black droppings.
if theres no sign of these, then you can be pretty certain that you dont have a problem.
