Any thoughts on a good value video encoder

I'm having problems with synch-ing audio and video on AVI files encoded to MPG2 files by NERO for burning to DVD and understand that NERO isn't terribly good at encoding. I've tried out TMPGenc and have just used AVS Smart Convertor but wonder if anyone can suggest the best value encoder?

Hi
Loads of encoders out there, and I've probably tried most of them, but in my opinion tmpgenc 2.5 is the best, quality wise, set it to high quality, leave it overnight, and you get a good quality dvd.
What I would do is download avicodec, this program tells you what quality your file is, its also good to see what frame rate your avi/mpeg is, 25fps for Pal, 29 fps for NTSC and if all the necessary codecs are installed on your pc.

Then I would encode for say 5mins, then take it back to avicodec and see what quality is it now, you should definately see an improvement on quality, if not then the encoder is no good.
Some encoders to try
WinAvi video encoder

DvdSanta

Tmpgenc Express 3.0X Press, this is an upgrade to 2.5, a lot easier to use, a couple of clicks and away you go.

VSO ConvertXtoDVD

Hope this helps0 -
I have tried a few with varying results:
What works one time dont allways work the next time it all depends on your source file.
Also some players are not keen on the re encoded dvd files they play them but jump and pixelate.
Personally I wouldnt bother as it is a pain in the butt and with BB speeds increasing all the time best getting the dvd files.
Or get a divx player.0 -
