Help I need to knit a romper suit for tr(action) man

My DD has a book called 'Traction Man is here' where the main character ( a sort of action man) has a 'romper suit and bonnet knitted by his granny'. She has asked if I can knit her one just like it!! I haven't knitted anything for years. I've tried googling for action man patterns and have only found a pair of trousers so far. This is a sort of all-in-one jumpsuit. The bonnet is separate but I can probably manage that. Any ideas???

Hi, I thought I would have a look through my patterns I have just received from my mum as there are a few action man things in there. Sadly there are no jumpsuits. I have found a couple of online knitting patterns which you might be able to combine to make a jumpsuit (hopefully, I imagine you would start on the trousers and just make the waist longer, continue upwards and then use the other pattern to help with the arms ). I did a search for all in ones, but couldn't see anything online.
The first link has a pattern for a hat too, hopefully it might be useful.

My mum knitted lots of outfits for my Sindys and my brother's Action Men and I do remember that it was difficult to dress the doll in an all-in-one suit, it involved much bending of the arms and stretching of the suit to get it on right IIRC.:D
I do hope you get something you can use,

Thank you so much for the links. I, too, remember trying to dress my brother's action man in his wet suit. Lots of talc was needed!!

    Ah.....

When I first read this I thought it was your daughter who wanted a knitted suit to wear. I was so disturbed by this idea that I didn't reply.

  • Have you thought of adapting a sindy or barbie pattern?

Thanks kune, that gave me a good laugh and I know she will too! I will be using the trousers & jumper pattern and adapting them somehow although I'm no expert!

I couldn't find a pattern for a jumpsuit but I did find this cut out and dress Traction Man with clothes. It reminds me of the paper fashion dolls I had when I was little!

Thank you for taking the trouble to look this out. I see he still has his bonnet but his romper suit has been unravelled down to swimming shorts (hope this doesn't happen to mine when I make it!).

Barbie/Sindy patterns would fit (tr)action man so if anyone has links to any other simple cardigan/trouser patterns that I can put together I would be most grateful.

I've found a site that has hundreds of free Barbie & Action Man knitting patterns. The site is Swedish so it's best to look through the pictures of clothes and make a note of the numbers that you like, then click on the "Patterns In English" link on the left and find the number you want. The knitting pattern opens as a document ready to print.

I had a quick look and there's quite a few jumpsuits on there, numbers 765, 793 & 820 look quite good. I'm bookmarking the site and think I might start knitting Barbie patterns for my little niece and give them to her with a basic Barbie for Christmas.

It's a brilliant site, it's even got patterns for hats, boots & bags and they've adapted every Abba costume into a Barbie or Action Man pattern!

:rotfl: :rotfl: how unusual  - sounds like a scene from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert ;) !

Joking aside, that's a great site - thanks for posting. I've added it to my favourites - sure it'll come in useful closer to Christmas :D.

Added to my favourites too! The Bratz ones could be handy as well. My kind of knitting - small and quite quick, not too much sewing involved ... (now, where to find the wool).
