Really 6" am surprised I suppose that is because the crops don't stay in very long and don't have time to develop a deeper root system. This might cause a problem with longer term crops, possibly.

    Good morning :)

Been really busy, so will try to catch up here as soon as possible. Hope everyone is alright, I'll be back as soon as the caulis are blanched and washing on/out.

Edited in: OK, I think I have caught up for now.

Bails - the odd house looks really interesting in the schedule and then it's totally let down by the fact that the main road runs parallel with the one acre garden. In fact, the road is so close that we drove straight past the house without even considering the possibility that it was the one in the schedule. I guess it would be fine and rural for someone moving from a big town or city, though and the acre of garden does offer some compensation. When is it you're off overseas?

Shaz, thanks for the Tesc0 CC info; I've already used up that option, so stoozing still looks out for me this year. I'm sure I've worked my way through them all by now LOL

Patchworkcat, hope everything goes well for you with your 2nd opinion/consultant.

Looby-loo, isn't it amazing that you can just go online and find so much written on so many subjects? It still amazes me that I can do all the research I want without even having to leave the house. Doesn't help with health/fitness/weight issues, but it saves a fortune in both time and money. :)

It's clouded over here again but I'm still optimistic about the possibility of a sunny day. I've chopped, blanched, bagged & frozen 3 small cauliflowers, washing is done and work is downloaded. Just need to catch up with that and then head for the greenhouse. :)

Some interesting recipies on this sight - I've been totally engrossed for the last 1/2 an hour - how can there be so much to write about carrots. I've bookmarked it for later:rotfl:

Nyk, why are you up so early?!
The answer to your 'when do we go' is 'I don't know', which is frustrating the h*ll out of me right now! Maybe mid August although the way I feel at the mo I'd love nothing more than to get a job and get stuck into something purposeful :( After so long out of work I'm desperate to get back to what I love and this seems to be taking me away from that again...

More sorting out today and a long walk with the dog then meant to be a BBQ at my parents later - or not judging by the weather at the mo :rotfl:All frugal activities today though :T

Mentioned to elder GD last night that SM (who she's met) was moving up to Scotland to live next door to another "friend we talk to on the computers", and that there was another house for sale just up the road from them - and said that Grandma was thinking of having a look at it (wanted to see her reaction, though I hope that any 'forced by finances' move is more local). I got an immediate 'no' from her, but she had another think when I said the garden was huuuuuge and possibly had a duck pond. She said the dogs would like the space (probably the ducks too - but we didn't discuss that :rolleyes2 ) but I still can't move away. Even promises of loooong holidays with Grandma during school holidays didn't get her to budge..... Apparently I can't move away 'cos she loves me and would miss me too much :D

Have to say the road wouldn't bother me in the slightest (as long as there's a decent boundary to keep dogs in). My current house has a 6 foot wall at the bottom of my back garden, and the other side of that is the main road which grinds to a total standstill in rush-hour, and has emergency services flying up and down it all day and night......

I'm normally up around 6.30am but had an early night last night, so I ended up waking for 5.30 this morning and just got up. Cockerals are crowing, cows mooing, sheep baa-ing from about 4am here, so we don't really tend to keep regular hours. I don't have a watch and my alarm clock is the cockeral. Working from home means as long as the work gets done, I can eat. Nobody mentioned anything about times. :rotfl:

Got wacky neighbours here, they keep lighting their fire as though they are cold. Maybe they're southerners. :rotfl:Must go be nosy now and see what's happening in their garden. :rotfl: SM has so much to tell you all when she gets back online!

I thought there was snow up north somewhere (even though it's summer)!

    Evening everyone :)

I've had a long day at the bakery today - 8am til 5pm, and when I got there this morning, there'd been a flood! What we think happened is that the person in the flat upstairs had run a bath and forgotten to turn it off, and flooded their bathroom, and then consequently that has come down into the shop. Needless to say, the first hour or so was pretty stressful sorting all that out, and then because of that, we were behind on everything for the rest of the day, as it was pretty busy serving people, so you don't get a chance to catch up on everything.

The funeral is on Tuesday, but unfortunately I'm at work all day and won't be able to get the time off for travel and to go there. My mum can't either, so we're both a little sad by that, but then she wasn't expecting to be able to go, and I wasn't either to be honest. We're going to send a contribution where they've asked, so at least we're able to do that.

I'm going to set myself a little challenge I think. I need to save £825 by September, for my tuition fees (my dad is going to lend me the other £2500 and I have to pay him back in installments) and so I'm going to try and have a big sort out, and get some DVDs/books on Ebay/Amazon/Play and see how that goes. If I i can even raise just £100 that would help towards saving for that, as I don't really get a lot of wages spare each week. I'm going to go and have a look around my room in a bit to see if I can get that ball rolling. I have sold quite a lot of dvd's on Ebay before, but not for a while :) I'm quite excited to be honest! :o I have far too many dvds and books really, that the cupboard they are kept in in my room has to be kept shut, otherwise they all start to fall out! so yes, now I've wrote it down here, I have to do it :rotfl:

Hope you've all had a good day :) I'm currently sat in bed as its freezing in our house, but I would not let mum light the fire, as its June and I refuse! :rotfl:

Hi Whitewing, yes, you are correct in thinking that it's been snowing, but not here. We are nowhere near Aviemore or the Cairngorms, so all we got was the hail storm. That area of the Highlands is the main skiing resort, so it's not any surprise to hear of snowfall. To be fair, the mountains are fairly high and there are few months of the year that you can't see some snow on the peaks. Have you ever visited the Cairngorms or Ben Nevis? It's awesome. I can highly recommend a holiday there.

Must check SFT's blog and see if Scotland is included in her humungous list of countries visited. :D

You can tell that this is a frugal living thread and that it is gardening weather - it is very quiet on here, but I know where everyone is at.

I've not much to report either, still watching the pennies. I've been away a lot this week, next week is a bit better. I've been helping my mum with her tomato plants, I've none of my own this year, so I re-potted hers and put canes onto them today. My MIL gave me 10 more, but they are tiny and I don't know if they will come to anything as it is so late on, but we will see.

I'm watching with interest to see if Cheryl ends up going to live near Nyk and Sophiesmum, it will end up being a frugal commune down that way, make sure that you make a caravan park/campsite/bed and breakfast space for frugal holidays.:D
