Why does it cost so much to call a CAB? Especially seeing as they're supposed to be helping us!!
I'm calling the Enfield and the Haringey cabs, and they're 0844 or 0870 numbers.
Shocking!

I find your post to be little short of insulting to the work done by the many CAB around the UK
Who do you think pays for the CAB ?
Each branch is a registered charity and has to support itself.
If you don't like paying something towards their running costs - don't use them ! PAY someone else - a solicitor or an accountant - for your advice.0 -

Agreed, or why not just go there in person? When an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
I think people are being a tad unfair.
The CAB already gets a wad of cash from the OP via government grants and numerous other funding from interested bodies and of course private donations.
The CAB should not be ripping people off by using these premium rate numbers. They are a charity and should know fine well people struggle to find the money to ring these numbers.0 -

There is no need for them to run on Non-Geographic codes. The standard code for the area is good enough. As for using the money earned to pay for their services, sorry - the telco gets a bigger cut, so lets keep things rational. They don't charge for their advice to those who call in person, why should they charge anyone for answering a phone? After all, the caller is paying for the call to be delivered at their expense... all they have to do is pick it up. NOT profit from it.0

"Funding the Bureau

Citizens' Advice Bureaux are independent charities who receive no Government funding."

"Ripping off ?" - grow up, please !
"Scammers" - as well, perhaps !0 -
Do you not think that these numbers prevent the phones being totally clogged up with spurious pathetic callers calling with bizarre complaints and questions, simply because the number is free.
After all, if 999 get calls from people because they can't get their Sky remote to work, what number of timewasting calls do you think the CAB take every day.0 -

Look up "premium" in a dictionary!
If a call is charged over and above the norm, then it is charged at a premium, use the term "revenue sharing" if you are not comfortable with "premium", the end result is the same, except with 087 numbers the caller is covertly overcharged.
0871 numbers are now under the Payphoneplus regime, the same regulator that controls 09 numbers, and 0871 are classed as premium rate.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
