Wrong again. We do have responsibility and we have piles and piles of work that never ends.

Are you even in the RAF?

To say you wont see much of the world as an RAF Firefighter is a riddiculous statement. They spend more time away than at home.

yes i am in the RAF, i'll let you guess what trade group. my snide remarks about admin may point you in the right direction

having piles and piles of never ending work probably explains why you always !!!! up peoples wages!!
You got to get through what you've got to go through to get what you want but you got to know what you want to get through what you got to go through.

My dad did nigh on 20 years as part of the civil defense fire service.

He didn't cover any plane crashes and not even that many fires but he was good at playing cards and snooker! ;)

Wrong. Fireman are one of the trades that spend the most time away these days...

You are most certainly right! Currently, and for the past few years since I've been in, an RAF Firefighter can be expected to be away for 4 months every 9-12 months. Admittedly, there isn't a great deal of requirement for their skills when they're back at their domestic unit but they are a valuable asset in the hot and dusty places - they are the stretcher bearers who attend to the inbound casualties as soon as the Helo arrives and rush them back to the Hospital. As it happens, one of my mates has the unenviable job of flying out to each FOB and PB in Afghanistan to carry out fire training and equipment maintenance/inspections, so the potential is there to see and do things that many RAF personnel will never get the chance to do, especially if they're a shiney! He's also on his four 4 monther in as many years.

    Hope this Helps

They are so undermanned I can't understand why they would say they weren't recruiting.

With the amount of time they spend away every year, large numbers of FF leave every year through natural turnover. Add to that some of the shifts they have work at some units (24 on, 24 off anyone?) and that after serving three years, you become more viable for the civilian fire service, in respect of applications. Recruitment over the entire Armed Forces has bottlenecked right now since we are largely fully manned and with the looming SDSR, we can expect a flood of redundancies, especially from the RAF. If the economy picks up and jobs market opens up, there will also likely be an exodus of people signing off thinking it's rosier on the other side, recruitment and training will take time before people are operationally ready and plug the gaps that the other's left behind.
