Couple of plumbing questions

Options
As title really !

1) As i understand the room that has the thermostat in should not have a TRV fitted to the radiator - my stat is one end of the hall and the rad the other = it has a TRV fitted, should it still not have one ?

2) In the process of moving a radiator, current rad is too small and in the wrong place. I read that liquid TRVs are better than wax - current ones are oldish honeywell and same style one is wax - is it worth getting a liquid one or is the difference not worth it ?

ooo cheeky 3rd question, what TRVs do people recommend ?

    1) Yes don't fit a TRV on your hall radiator. If there was a TRV on the hall radiator and it were set for a lower temperature than the room stat the roomstat probably won't turn off the system as it may never reach a high enough temperature. If a TRV on the hall rad were set to a higher temperature than the roomstat then the roomstat will turn off the system first anyway leaving the TRV redundant. Plus if every radiator has a TRV on it will put unnecessary strain on the system. When we had our new boiler fitted one of the requirements was to have an auto-bypass valve fitted to ensure there was always a route for water to circulate when the pump is pumping.

2&3) Not sure on liquid vs wax. so can't comment..with our boiler change we had a couple of new Danfoss RAS-C2 TRVs fitted in the bedrooms which i believe are wax one's. Elsewhere in the house we have old honeywell one's. Either way i'd go for a TRV that is bi-directional so can be fitted on flow or return (the danfoss one's you have to remove the stat and twist a collar to switch direction).

As you know from the 1st time renovators thread, i'm looking into moving radiators myself at the moment and will be replacing two bedroom radiators (one has a danfoss TRV and one a honeywell) for one radiator in a new location. Will probably reuse the Danfoss TRV. I've also discovered our kitchen radiator is about half the heat output that it needs to be so considering upgrading that too...though the current one is 640mm wide so i'll probably have to go down to 600 wide double panel one with extension pieces or else replumb it completely.

Cheers Andrew (great name btw ;) )

I went with a danfoss liquid one in the end, worked out slightly cheaper than the Honeywell wax one so worth a shot !!

I will put some pics up in the other thread or my blog so you can see it all - moving the rad is turning into an adventure like most things we do but i am sure it will be worth it when we are actually warm in the room !!
