Advice on funds

Options
Hello,

I am looking at a number of investment funds and I would be grateful if I could have the opinions of other members of the forum on a number of candidate funds. I have read the sticky on posting is this forum and I understand that this should not be a problem. I do not expect people to provide 'advice' in the IFA sense of the word nor will I base any action I take on other people's views but it would still be useful if anybody add her/his piece of wisdom.

Can someone suggest whether this is the right forum and whether the above would raise eyebrows?

Thanks.

Under the rules of the forum members are not allowed to recommend investments.

If you were to post your ideas you might get one or two posters offering an opinion

I think you can post a list of funds that you've come up with yourself and ask for opinions!

As I said, I am not looking for investment advice (in any sense of the word), just another layperson's views. In any case, following your and ozzage's post, I will simply describe my proposed approach and a short list of funds I have come up with.

On the basis of a recent 'attitude to risk' assessment, I came out as a person inclined to take average risks, which I think its quite correct. However, I do not have the time and knowledge to research the massively complicated funds market. As a result, I consider choosing a couple of funds (to start with) from within the Balanced Managed sector and the Cautious Managed sector (the latter may be less risky than my assumed risk profile but as it is my first investment in funds I think I need to be cautious). My research so far (3, 5 yr performance, ratings, managers, etc. at M'Star, Citywire and Trustnet) has led me to the following two lists:

    Balanced Managed:
    CF Miton Special Situations
    CF Miton Strategic Portf
    CF Ruffer European O
    Jupiter Merlin Balanced Portf
    M&G Managed X
    Newton Balanced
    Troy Trojan O

    Cautious Managed:
    CF Ruffer Total Return
    Gartmore Cautious
    Henderson MultiMngr Distr A
    Threadneedle Equity & Bond

Any comment on whether these are 'good' or 'bad' or anything else that springs to mind, if other decent ones are missing from the list, as well as suggestions for further reading, sources of info ect, would be much welcome.
