Mix up on car insurace, im not actually paying for anything but still covered

hi,

I just had my car insurace renewal details come though the post and just discovered on my bank account that they havent took any monthly payments for the insurace since 24th january, i know around that date i phoned them to change some details on an additional driver and i know they said on the phone the price would increace but looking at all my d/d there is nothing come out.

Im thinking that they have done something wrong over the phone and deleted my bank account details. and i was thinking that i may carry on with the renewal even though i can get a cheaper deal else where because at this moment in time im getting it for free

I have all the documention and even logged online to see all the details so am covered

What do you think i should do

If you renew they will probably notice you have not been paying for insurance.
If you go to someone else the same is true.
Own up and pay them the money you owe, after all you have had the benefit of the cover.
If you don't pay them they have the right to chase you for it, so save yourself all the hassle now.

A letter of complaint about there lax attitude towards taking payment however might get you a goodwill gesture as a thank you, always worth a punt.

By not calling the co and sorting out the problem I would be worried that in the event of a claim they might say that as they haven't had payment for 2 months you aren't covered.

I know its their responsibility to take the DD but its also (IMO) the policy holders responsibility to make sure payments are taken correctly.

Could it be that they cancelled the policy when you called to change the named drivers details?

    Stranger things happen.....

  • I put a post on another thread about this last night (to do with bank charges)
This happened to me once years ago (when I was just starting out and not earning much).
Long story short, insurer never took payment for about 7 or 8 months. Realised their mistake and put in for X (7 or 8) individual payments.
I thought I was being clever. 1st payment got taken, all others refused by the bank (at £35 a time) as there wasnt enough to cover it. Then I still had to pay my insurer into the bargain.

So i'd either phone them or ensure the moneys in the bank to cover it.

You may find that you've made all the payments you need to.

Quite often, when you take the DD option it may only have been over 9 or 10 payments and not 12 - so it could be you've made all your payments for this year anyway.

Check the policy documentation as it usually gives a breakdown of payments and tells you on what date the payments will be taken.

Can I ask who the insurer or broker is?

Another thing to remember is if you don't renew with this insurer, tell them. It is common policy to auto renew insurance now, and if you insure the car with someone else and don't tell them, you may find you have two policies on the go.
