Barclays Overdraft Protection

Hi
Yesterday I enquired with Barclays regarding a £2.80 monthly charge for my o/d. I have always thought it was for the privaledge of the od facility, I was informed it was od protection.

Now This has been on my account for years and I can honestly say I never remember being told it was protection.

Q. Is there anyway of claiming my money back? and if so how many months/years could I claim for?

I am unemployed but medically I am not fit for work (pre existing condition) so would have not been covered bt this policy.

Thanks
Think it's about time the comping fairy remembered where I am! lol

    Hi hun

I would ask the bank for more info on this, as I am not sure if this is just a part of the facility, however I could be wrong here in this case.

You need to find what thiis would cover you for in case this is nothing to do with being from work etc, hopefully someone will confirm this to you, but still if its something that is optional and you did not know or require this maybe you could ask them to cancel as its worthless to you anyway, and ask if they can refund you with all you have paid.

Its a question you could also post on the below thread, think its called something like banking and savings, if you find out its an optional product, let us know and we can try to get something sorted out or as I said above write to them and let them know its something you did not realise you had on the account, which is worthless to you and will appreciate a refund in all you have paid towards this, they have 8 weeks like any other complaint to respond, and if your not satisfied by the time you receive the final response, I am sure you could take this to the Financial ombudsman service (FOS) in order for them to investigate.

    Good luck.;)

I don't understand why you've been paying it for years and never questioned it. You don't pay for having the priviledge of an overdraft facility. On your bank statement it would be described as "Overdraft Protection". I know because I was paying the same monthly premium, and when I stopped going overdrawn I cancelled it, otherwise I;d be paying for nothing every month. I doubt you will get it refunded.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

That will teach me to read by statements correctly. I never questioned it before as like I said I did think it was overdraft fees.

    Thanks Anyway.

    Hi There

Lets look at the positive side of this.

Firstly how long have you had Payment Protection in Place. If you do not know find out from Barclays.

Secondly How long have you had your medical problems.

thirdly how long have you been out of work.

Can you answer these and we can then get a better picture about your case.:D

There is an old saying never give up until the "fat lady sings" thats me. Tee Hee. Only joking. Am sure somebody somewhere on here can help.

  • Hi all,

I am in the same position in that I now realise what a waste of money this charge is - and that if it was explained to me I do not believe I would have agreed to it, or indeed do I remember doing so.

In response to whether this charge is optional - I think clearly it must be as one of the previous posts said that they 'cancelled' it, therefore it is clearly optional. QED

If Barclays cannot produce documentary evidence that I agreed to this charge then surely what they have done is illegal and I can claim it back, yes?

    Si
