unfortunately you have to go through itunes...had to do this with ds1 &2's shuffles we got them for xmas...and I HATE itunes  however, you can copy your stuff into itunes, so you will have them in original (MP3 ??) format and apple's aac format.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

As long as they aren't protect with DRM and are in a format iTunes supports (such as mp3 or AAC), you can add the music to your iTunes library for use on your iPods.
iTunes is probably the easiest piece of software I have ever used; I have no idea why some people seem to hate it.0 -

Pretty much. Here's the user's guide:

It's really very easy to use.0 -
I think the problem is people are forced to use it and its bloated. Other MP3 players let you just transfer the music over, thats all I do with my creative ZEN, no real reason why you shouldn't be able to on an ipod.0

You don't have to use itunes, there are other programs out there that will do the same job for you. I have not used it myself but a lot of people praise media monkey (mediamonkey dot com). That will sync ipods and other mp3 players.0

I use Foobar2000 with a component to manage my ipod. Didn't like iTunes all that much, especially the 64bit iterations being a bit flakey to begin with although I'm sure that's been rectified now.0
