"pay cash in at any main store checkout "

It's interesting to see what they class as a "main store" though. There is a large Tesco near me, which I would have thought was definitely a "main store" but it's not on the list on their website.

I think the list on that page may only be for the 500 Tesco stores where you can deposit cheques at the checkout:
    • pay in cheques at main store checkouts at over 500 stores.
Check the list below to see if you can pay cheques in at your local store.

Some people want their entire lives run for them. In this case, Tesco. Resist it before they take us all over. It'll do none of us any good in the end to put all your eggs in the massive Tesco basket. Resist!
  • Tesco is a HUGE institution. Whilst many traditional banks are posting losses and losing customer confidence, tesco are going from strength to strength. I'd certainly bank with them. Seems to me its one of the safest places to put your money. (northern rock aside )

So is that your view on the Co-Operative Wholesale Society?
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

The head of Tesco's financial services division today said he was determined to build a new bank untainted by the runaway bonus culture that led to the near collapse of the UK banking system last year.
Andrew Higginson said Tesco was "building a bank from scratch" and that remuneration would be in line with the company's, albeit generous, framework. To his knowledge, he said, Tesco never "guaranteed" bonuses.

Tesco wil not launch the new products until the second half of 2010 as first it has to build the IT infrastructure required to support the bank, a project Higginson described as a "huge undertaking." The personal finance arm had previously run on RBS's systems.

There's at least 4 branch networks that will be up for grabs soon too:
    1. Bradford and Bingley/Alliiance and Leicester(Once Abbey National finishes it's changover to Santander)
    2. Northern Rock (Once taken out of temporary public ownership)
    3. Britiannia (Once The Co-Op Bank decides which branches to keep)
    4. Cheltenham & Gloucester (Once Lloyds Banking Group decides what do to with it. There's also loads of duplication between Halifax and Lloyds TSB branches too.)

I think its great that Tesco will get into banking, its just a shame that they dont have a store anywhere near me, probably 30-45mins drive to the nearest one. It would be great if they hooked up with the post office to allow you to pay in through their network like coop bank does but I cant see it happening. The offer of clubcard points instead of interest would be interesting

Tesco are unlikely to be interested in these, apart from maybe a few piecemeal acquisitions in major locations - they have their own established branch network!
  • I would never bank with a supermarket, let alone Tesco. I would rather stay with HSBC/Barclays. However i do not even visit by bank, i have only been to my bank ttwice for anything other than a cash withdrawal was back in 2004 when i changed my bank account to a Student Account and back in June to discuss a mortgage!

Also i would not want to wait in a line to discusss my bank account, would you?
