Transferring files from desktop to laptop

I am thinking of buying a new laptop, but I want to transfer my files and programs from my desktop, problem is, I have lost most of the original CD's for things like Microsoft Office, Nero and some came pre-installed with no CD's to start with!

Will they work on my new laptop and if so, how do I transfer them?

My desktop is about 4 years old, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz, only 496MB RAM, 70gb hard drive, running Windows XP

Thanks!

Not all your old software will necessarily run under Vista though.
cajef, not clear how this works in relation to the product keys, eg MS office. Does it de-activate it on the original machine and activate on the newer one? Won't the OP still need the original key to reactivate it-which if she's lost the CD she is unlikely to have?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Openoffice is an alternative to MS office.

Also if you have your product registration keys, should be able to just download and re-install clean.
  • You will have problems transferring applications as they require registry, file location settings, and even same user profile settings. The only viable way is to image the whole disk from your desktop and install everything on your laptop. This may cause other problems. You best get new versions of software.
