USA travel insurance for six months?

Hello all,

At the end of nex month (April) I'm off travelling around the USA for just under six months. I just want basic insurance - I'm not doing any extreme sports or anything.

The only trouble is, travel insurers only seem to cover single trips for up to 90 days. Does anyone know any insurers that cover for longer? What other options might there be?

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Regards,

PartyRichter

Easiest to do a Annual policy.

Never do Basic on a USA trip.

Always make sure you have minimum £5m cover on medical.
you should get Medical £5m,Baggage£1500, Cancellation £2500, and £2m personal liability( all of which are standard things to have covered) for around £50-55.00 but it wil mean you will have to cross the border to either Canada or Mexico or maybe one of the Carribean islands (on a budget flight) for at least one night to break up the 1 x 6 month period into 2 x 90 days periods.

Check annual policies very carefully - they usually have a maximum duration of stay for one trip of way under 6 months.

And getting 2 90 day policies usually won't work - with most you have to start your trip in the UK. You'll be able to buy the second one OK, but if you come to make a claim on it the likelihoood is that it will be turned down

From a quick look Direct Line look as though they may offer what you want - give them a ring or check their website. I'm sure there are others.

Do you have a visa that allows you to stay in the US for six months?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I'm currently in America and have been for the past few months. We have been here many times for long periods; up to 3 years. Every six months you just go over the border into either Mexico or Canada and then re-enter a few days later etc.

We have always insured thru http://www.endsleigh.co.uk/category-travel.html

They do student travel insurance but you don't need to be a student.Cover was for up to 2years continous/continual? (no break) travelling. Unless you are travelling with expensive luggage you used to be able to save 25% of the premium by excluding the luggage coverage.

Hope this helps, have a good vacation.

    .

I assume you have a visa, coz with a visa waiver you can't (reliably and officially anyway) do that and it's only 90 days anyway.

Many annual policies only allow a certain number of days holiday per year. Perhaps backpacker's insurance may fit the bill for you. As mentioned in a previous post make sure you have a good level of medical cover as American medical treatment is not cheap, should anything happen.

Wow, you're so clever, of course I've got a visa; well done dzug. Of course I've got a multiple entry visa which allows my visits of up to SIX MONTHS.Your statement of 90 days only applies to the visa waiver program. Please get your facts correct before posting unreliable information. But that has nothing to do with the original question and I only stated my visiting periods to assure the OP that I knew what I was talking about, whereas obviously you don't know the facts.

I think your statement assumes I may be ignorant, stupid or breaking the law. That is very rude. Your statement also was not helpful to the OP in any way whilst my reponse answered the question.

So genius, why not think of it from the side of people who know damn all about US visa restrictions - from your original post it reads that all you have to do is a visa run every few months and you can stay for an unlimited time in the US.

EVEN WITH A TOURIST VISA that isn't true. The odds are that at some point in the future YOU will be refused entry. My only surprise is that it hasn't happened already as after a couple of such runs the US authorities will naturally assume you must be working illegally in order to support yourself.

Without a visa you simply can't do that as Mexico/Canada isn't considered "abroad" for the purposes of the Visa Waiver Program so you can't "renew" a visa waiver that wayand in any case the US does get rather sniffy if you try to use the Visa Waiver a lot for no apparent reason

Another poster who doesn't know what he is talking about and who has not even attempted to answer the OP's question.

I stated facts based on personal experience. I answered the OP's question regarding where to get travel insurance for the USA for his nearly six month visit. I must admit that I did not assume he was a dumb idiot ( like some of you wish to assume) and that he had indeed arranged his visit to the USA knowing the current visa requirements.

I also do wonder Alan Rowell how many times you have dealt with the immigration guys at the Mexico and Canada border? If you've been refused entry it could be your attitude :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

PS. AlanRowell also states "US authorities will naturally assume you must be working illegally in order to support yourself"

I find it amazing that AR knows what a US immigration officer at the border will assume. That's real inside information .lol's
