Connecting Flights at Madrid Airport

Hi there, can anyone advise on what occurs with regard to getting a connecting flight at Madrid Airport, we're travelling with 2 children and have not travelled this way before. We're off to Lanzarote from Heathrow with Iberia and have to get a connection in Madrid (also with Iberia). There's 2 hours between flights so no time issues but do we collect our bags and clear passport control at Madrid or do we just follow connecting flights signage as I've seen at UK airports and not enter the main airport at all and have our bags moved (or lost) for us. Thanks for your help.

Your bags will be checked through. You will go through passport control and probably a security check.

Not sure if you will have to change terminals - I think a new one has been built since I was last there.

Iberia uses terminal 4 and the satellite terminal 4S at MADrid, have a look at your booking details, to get between 4 and 4S there is a shuttle train which doesn't take long. If bored look at how many misaligned terracotta internal wall panels there are in Terminal 4/S.

Do be sure to take anything really important in hand luggage. Last time I had to change 'planes at Madrid (also with Iberia) my checked luggage arrived late and then they messed up the process of getting it to me.
