Hi..im not sure if this is the right forum but I would be grateful for anyone's views..I need to buy a fax machine for the home, it is only really for light occasional use to receive or send the odd fax to/from overseas. I have an all in one printer (Lexmark X1190) which can send and receive faxes but will not work with a broadband connection.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable fax machine I can consider, I dont know where to start, there are so many variations in the market!

thanks a mill..

If it is occasional use, then you can manage without an actual machine.

You can get a fax to email number, with a slight reservation that some of these are 0870 numbers that cannot be reached from all foreign countries; you could get an American number instead though, or pay about £2 a month for a UK number ...

For outgoing faxes, Windows has a Fax service built in, but not usually installed, and you can make the calls using a dial-up modem in the computer.

This means you don't need a separate phone line of course

Or you could grab a 2nd hand one on e-bay (avoid the Amstrad e-mailer/fax though - it has to 'call home' on an 0870 number).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • I use E-fax https://www.efax.com it is absolutely brilliant, all my faxes arrive in the email and I only print the one's I need to.

If you do decide to go for the standalone fax option be sure to get one with a modem speed of upto 33.6kbps if your funds allow it. This will ensure that when it is communicating with a like machine that the time it spends sending faxes will be kept to a minimum, thereby keeping your costs down.

However, if you use 18866/1815/1899 to send your faxes to UK numbers starting 01 or 02, it won't really matter because these calls are untimed.
