Its not mad to pay for newsgroups access.
I only pay £110 (ish) a year for NewsHosting access, unlimited bandwidth, the lot.
Which really, is almost free.....
I'd also recommend NewsLeecher, which is great value for money

Considering I can download from newsgroups (um, I read alot of posts?) at full speed - thats on an 8meg connection - 24/7/352.
