Switching from EDF to Eon - electricity

I've got a key meter (for prepaid use) and have changed, 3 months ago, from EDF to Eon for my electricity bill. As far as I was concerned the switch over went thru fine - but I've just received an estimated bill from EDF for over £100! I have tried speaking with them on the phone but the operators are hopeless. Does anyone else have a similar experience? It seems I'll have to put it all in writing to try and get any semblance of a sensible response but I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Many tks:beer:

Often this happens because the meter doesn't get updated when prices go up causing a debt to build up. Next time it's updated, the debt is absorbed with adjusted prices but if you switch before this is done, you have a debit balance.

That said, I thought an advantage of key meters over the older prepay was that they were automatically updated. No debt previously on meter?

EDF ignored the final gas meter reading I gave on changeover to E.ON and charge me for an estimated reading over £100 higher. By the time their bill came, I'd already had a bill from E.ON using my final reading for a starting point, so I was being billed twice for the same gas.

I called EDF right away and they said they'd sort it out. Several final demands, threatening letters and phone calls later, they told me I had to call E.ON because they would only accept the correct reading if it came from them and they could not initiate the conversation.

I just got a correct bill for the 3 months up to last September from EDF. So you should probably call your new supplier and tell them to contact EDF; it might be quicker.

    Hi jdubb,

There’s some good advice on here so far.

I would definitely check the meter readings EDF have used on the final bill/statement match E.ON’s start reading any difference may account for this deficit. A higher than actual reading at the point of transfer would suggest you have used more electricity than you have put in to the meter in monetary terms.

This, as pointed out by smileygill, means the reading will need to be corrected by the two suppliers; this is called an Agreed Reads Dispute (ARD). You can raise this with either supplier but if it is EDF who has the incorrect reading I would push them to raise this. If E.ON has the wrong read contact them and ask for the ARD to be raised.

Magentasue may also be correct; the meter may not have picked up the electronic message needed to recalibrate the meter at the time of the last price increase. Meaning for a period of time you have underpaid for your electricity.

If this is the case, and you advise them that this is an error on there part rather than anything you have done, you may be in a position to not have to pay this bill. It is definitely worth disputing, once the reason for the balance is established. :)
