Tempoary Car Insurance

My car insurance renewal is in about 10 days but I am moving to Germany for a year for my placement year at uni. I am going to sell my car before I go.
I don't really want to get a full years policy but the only temporary insurance that I have found will only insure drivers over 21, I'm 20. I have looked into paying monthly and the cancelling it but then I would have to pay the cancellation fees with seem to around £50. I don't really want to have to pay that. Does anyone know of anything I could do?
Also I have 3 years no claims atm. Can this expire while I'm not driving? Or if I get another car in 2 years after I finish uni will I still have 3 years?

Thanks.

Not all company's charge the £50 - eg morethan charge £25.

And pro rata a normal annual policy does work out cheaper than short term insurance.

Your NCD does "expire" - generally insurers won't accept it if it's 2 years since it was issued, though it can be just 12 months, or more than 2 years, depending on individual companies policy.
  • Thanks, I'm currently with More than, I thought they charged £55 but maybe I'm remembering wrong, I did look at quite a few. Would it be the issuing insurance company that expires it or would it be that not all companies would accept it?

It's the company you take it to who may not accept it if its too old for them.
  • Thanks, I'll have to look out for that when I come back then.
