Hello,
I’ve been buying ISA funds for the last 10 years. Started with a tracker and, then, as I got more clued up, identified better funds. They’ve all out performed the FTSE 100 so I’m happy. Well actually I have repressed the memory of the Framlington Japan I bought in 05. Even that taken into consideration I’m happy because overall I’ve not lost any money. Well I’ve lost in real terms but from what I’ve heard from other investors I haven’t come off too badly and figure I’m assessing my performance at the worst possible time. Hopefully!
My star performer is a Jupiter Financial Opps that is up 40% since 05. I was going to get another this year, but I realised that based on the buy and sell prices there is effectively a 5% purchasing fee even though my Hargreaves Landsdown broker refunds the actual fee.
I set about finding something with similar performance but with no purchase fee.
I’ve just bought two funds based mainly on research using the CityWire advanced fund search tool (it allows filtering based on fund manager and fund performance).
My only nagging doubt is that I have never seen them come up as recommendations from financial advisors in the web/press.
Am I missing negative aspects of these that are blindingly obvious? They are both from Cappita Finance in the Balanced Managed sector:
CF Ruffer European O.
CF Miton Special Sits Portfolio.
Any views/advice very very much appreciated. Thanks, Ian

The European one certainly has excellent performance and the manager is top rated by Best invest's added performance tool and Morningstar.
Has topped the sector apparently:

I've invested in the Ruffer fund and I believe its a good fund. It was fairly defensive through last year - heavily in cash and it's been using index put options to protect against falling equity markets. It also performed well in the good years. The manager seems to have the ability quickly move things around - which I think is one of the advantages of it being a smaller fund.
There is more info here about it http://www.ruffer.co.uk/downloads/REF%20Monthly%20Newsletter%20-%20February%2009.pdf0 -
Thanks turbobob and thrupence. I suppose i just wanted a bit of reassurance. Great to get feed back from someone who has one of these and has positive.
I recommend the citywire tool because it takes into consideration the managers performance on other funds they may have managed.
I'm going to take a look at the best invest one.
thanks once again0
