Housing Benefit..

..hope this is the right place to post this.

Me and OH are looking to move into our own house (at the moment im renting my uncles flat off of him)

Im 5 weeks pregnant, and was looking online at what help housing benefit wise i would get. As we're both working full time it says something along the lines of £76 a week.

But would i get this before the baby was born or afterwards?

The council is shut until monday and im intregued now lol.

Thanks :D

Any help with housing will be means tested and depend on your income.

LHA would be at the one bedroom rate (until baby here) and you may find, that as you both work full time, you would get very little help (if any)

Doesn't it go on your income though? As we both get about 12k each a year.

It all seems so confusing lol x

    Try this benefit calculator
  • http://www.leeds.gov.uk/Advice_and_benefits/Benefits/Benefits_calculator.aspx

    Hope this link works ^^^

Try this, it's the leeds benefit calculator for housing/council tax benefit, but might help you get an idea of what you could receive.
Enter your income/rent details and see what it comes out with. Enter 1 child under a year old and it will give you an idea of how much you might get when littly comes along, and also it will give you a rough idea of how much tax credits you may receive.

    Hope this helps!

On a combined income of £24k a year, you are very unlikely to get any help with your rent. In fact I think I can safely state you won't get any help.

    Bestpud is right I'm afraid.

With that income, I doubt you would get any help at all.

My Dad earns less than you and OH have coming in and has to pay full rent and council tax (his rent is £110 a week).

Were you looking at a council or private property?

If council, then you could have a very long wait indeed.

If private, then with the majority of properties, it could cost you well over £1000 before you even move in. (Rent upfront/deposit/fees etc)

Do you get help with housing benefit now?

Well according to the housing benefit website i was on last night, says we would get £76 a week help. I put in both our incomes.
Am going private, much easier. We're guna save for the deposit and such like, but a 2/3 bedroom house is looking at around £550 a month.
Oh and also, should of mentioned, i wont be going back to work full time after maternity leave as i'll be starting uni. Does that factor into it?

    :D xx

If you are looking now your LHA will be for a 1 bedroom rate (you can get a 2-3 bedroom if you wish but you will be capped at the 1 bedroom rate - which for Portsmouth is £116.77 per week)
Put all this in to entitledto and it shows
"The calculator has determined that you are not entitled to any means-tested benefits or tax credits under your current circumstances. "

When baby is here you will go to the 2 bedroom rate of £145 and if you are not earning you may get a little help however if you are full time at uni all your grants and loans will be counted as income - but you will get child benefit and tax credits
