Home insurance payment problem

Hi,
I recently noticed that the direct debit for my home insurance had stopped going out a few months ago. It is embarrassing because I am usually very thorough in checking what goes in and out.
It goes back to when they started to take too much money for a couple of months and I had to contact them to get a refund. They refunded the money no problem but the next month the money stopped going out completely.
I contacted them worried that I had no house insurance and asked them to reinstate the direct debit. I got an email reply from the retentions department saying
"I can confirm you are still on cover for the time being, however the premium outstanding will need to be paid in order for us to maintain your insurance policy without any cover breakage."
"Please confirm how you would like to pay for this outstanding amount."
I am loathed to pay this as I see it as their fault and I'm sure if I had a claim in this time they would have challenged it. I am also wondering why it came from the retentions department.
I do not know how these things work so any advice on whether I should pay and forget it or ways to challenge it would be useful.
Thanks,

If you had needed to claim you would have expected the Insurers to pay the claim and would have made a complaint if they had refused.
You will be liable to pay the missed payments as when paying by Instalments Insurers expect you to put that money aside in your account so if they miss payments as in your case the money is there for them to collect the missed payments.
If you ring and discuss the matter with them politely they may allow you split the missed payments over the next few months if you would struggle to pay the miissed amount in one go0
