Lec elan fridge is freezing

I hope this is the right area to post this sort of thread. I'm in rented accommodation and when we moved in the landlady let us keep her old fridge freezer. As it was old etc she didn't want it anymore, but she also said if it broke she wouldn't fix it. We'd have to dump it and replace. Well it seems to be going a bit mad at the moment. The freezer is making lots of ice on all the walls/door and the fridge is freezing all our food and drink. I'd really like to have some milk that is still in liquid form :p There is a little dial with numbers one to six. It was on one when it started freezing everything, so we're trying the two setting. I'm not sure which way is colder (no indication on dial). We don't have an instruction manual, but the door tells me it is a Lec Elan... Is it time to phone an electrician? Or is there anything else I can try?

Some fridges go by temperature, other by settings. so 1 may be 1 degrees, which is why everything's freezing! Try it on 4 or 5, see how it goes.
  • Thanks, trying that now. Also moved it out of the alcove and cleaned all the filters etc. Nearly served my OH sandwiches with frozen ham in earlier, so I'm really hoping to find something that works

My mother had this problem and it turned out to be a faulty thermostat, luckily hers was still under warranty.

We had this problem and it turned out the coolant was leaking out. As the level begins to fall the fridge sort of overcompensates. Eventally the level drops too low and it stops working.
  • Also, check your door seals as ice buld-up can be from a leaky seal

Usually the higher the number on the dial, the colder the fridge will be.
  • Thanks for all the advice guys. I turned the dial up to 4 and it may be that or the newly cleaned filters and seals but it seems to be better now. I'm keeping a note of all your other suggestions though, as it is quite old and I'm not sure if this is a temporary reprieve!
