Cheque's (Destruction thereof).

A few weeks ago I had cause to post a personal cheque to a well known insurance company who shall remain nameless but for their initials. L&G.
I have just received a letter from them stating that they no longer require the cheque and have subsequently destroyed it.
Firstly, are they allowed to destroy a cheque or should it be returned?
Secondly, I only have their written word that it has been destroyed. How do I know?

You could cancel said cheque with your bank if you are in anyway unsure as to their sincerity0

They can do whatever they like with it. Presumably it costs less to simply shred the cheque rather than send it back to you for no real benefit.Secondly, I only have their written word that it has been destroyed. How do I know?
You have their written word, and could use that against them if it was miraculously cashed some time later. If you want to be certain, ask your bank to stop the cheque, although there will usually be a fee.0 -
Thankyou for the swift reponses. Much as I thought really but good to have some verification. The trouble I have had with this crowd beggars belief and nothing would suprise me anymore.
Once again, many thanks.

If you told your bank the cheque had been lost in the post, they wouldn't charge a fee to place a stop on it......0

Thanks for the tip Biggles. I've had enough of this bunch and their blitzkrieg attitude. Come the revolution they are straight against the wall.
Thanks again.
