Ideas please - skype alternative?

Im not sure if this is the right forum for my question - if anyone thinks it needs to be moved, please feel free!

My husband is going to be working away for a while and wants to be able to see my son while he is away. Ive been advised to use skype and a webcam, but he doenst have another laptop when he is away, and its a fairly short term job, so its not worth us buying another laptop (unless we have no option!).

Is it possible to use a phone as a webcam? Is there any alternative way of doing this?

Depending on the phone you might be able to do video calls, failing that and again depending on the phone there is a mobile version of skype (still in beta) that works on mobiles - however you'll probably need a smartphone capable of wireless.
