Anyone know of or use a decent VPN Server? preferably free
I know that Windows XP has an inbuilt server and client that you can setup from the new connections window . the client is OK but the server doesnt really seem to have much in the way of security.
I dont have a VPN setting on my router other than to forward the ports to the VPN server IP which would have made it easier to secure. (Netgear Wireless N). Othewise I am pretty happy with the router.
The main reason is so I can log into my network at home using my laptop mobile wireless connection. (not static IP )

Ok, I would recommend Endian Security appliance, it is a Linux Based system that has SSL VPN Technology, I have used this for some time now in the work place and it is very good - and it is very free too.
Download the bootable image and make a CD ROM from it, use an old PC as the server and you will need at least two network cards: 1 for WAN and 1 for LAN.
Have a look here;

Please stay away from PPTP Type VPN protocols (Windows VPN), they are unsecure and can be compromised within about 15 seconds, Open VPN is an SSL VPN i.e. you require a certificate on the client etc, if you choose to explore the Endian system just ask me for help any time as I have set this up for use in a commercial environment and have learned quite a bit about it.
Good luckSince when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
P.s I would also setup Dynamic DNS too - this will solve many head aches.

I use OpenVPN - its free opensource software and works just great. All I do is open up port 443 on my router at home and I can connect from anywhere on the planet. I travel extensively with my job & have tested this in many countries. The version in beta will allow port sharing of port 443 too.
With a proxy server inside your home LAN connected to the VPN, simply point to the proxy VPN address from a remotely connected PC and all traffic will appear to originate from your LAN. Useful when trying to watch BBC iPlayer programs or internet bookmakers when abroadChris Elvin0 -
Try Team Viewer (teamviewer dot com) it is a small program and has a server option, it is free for non-commercial use and requires no specialist knowledge to set it up. It works through an ssl tunnel and does not even need any settings changing on your router.0

you could also use logmein its free for one desktop and is very secure, plus it only registers as one site visit regardless of how long you stay logged into your machine, which is good if your company log and analyse what internet you access.0

Windows Live Mesh
It's free and easy to use. You just install create a Mesh Desktop online and install the app oin any computer you want access to. You can them access any of your mesh computers from any other mesh computer using the app, or from any other computer using the Online Desktop. It also gives you desktop level shared folders (also accessible from the online Mesh Desktop. You can also add Macs and Windows Mobile devices to your Mesh.The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

I guess as secure as LogMeIn. It's SSL based. As long as you use a good password, then it's as secure as the PC it's installed on. There's plenty of settings that can be used to configure permissions. THis is especially useful of sharing any of your Mesh folders with other Mesh users (for example, I share a folder with some family members for easy sharing of photos etc.)bob_man_uk wrote: »ive heard about live mesh, how secure is it?
