(or ref bwh/22285 from main page).
guessing a 20% difference in rates, thats just over the minimum wage for a very busy shop at the main rail station..
not to mention lack of any social life, and body clock screwed to hell.
GAWD! Agree with you brightonman - it would be very difficult to have one's social life with a night shift job and that is VERY little extra to pay for such disruption - both to one's life and one's health.
I'm guessing that there'd be some weekend work in the picture as well - just to make 100% sure and certain that a social life was totally impossible.
I'm guessing that anyone who thinks that sort of money is okay for night shift work has never done it - nor have I...but thats one lesson I dont intend to learn by experience.
There's been enough scientific studies by now to prove how bad an effect there is on one's health from night shift work - so the least they could do is pay a hefty premium for it.
Some jobs are essential 24/7 - but I hardly think a shop job comes under that heading..
EDIT: but then I've long since defined my parameters on this. I am prepared to work to 8pm at the latest (temporarily and voluntarily only) for a reasonable income - say £12 per hour. I wouldnt work during the night for "all the tea in China" - not even £50 per hour - even on a temporary basis. I need my sleep too much - and I would have thought everyone else would too.0 -
£7.16 an hr for night stock replenishment sounds reasonable to me, its a slightly better paid than their day rate because it is night work which does mess up your body clock a bit but that is why the pay is higher! The store needs to be replenished at night so that its ready to open nice and early for people buying their breakfast/lunch at the station on the way to work in the morning. Normally the M&Ss in stations I've ever visited are still busy at 11pm, which makes it difficult to do stock replenishment and cleaning in a small station store (without annoying the customers) until the store has closed.
However I'd definately work nights for £50 an hour though, thats over £96K a year assuming a 37hr week. I'd do it for a couple of years - pay my mortgage off and not have to worry about money so much!0 -
I also fail to see what is wrong with £7.16 for unskilled night work. It is a great deal more than JSA!
There was someone complaining they applied for night work at M&S and were offered a day shift as all the night ones snapped up by earlier applicants. I imagine for people with partners with regular jobs and kids this might be attractive as it's over 7 quid an hour with no childcare costs vs. less with childcare needs...0
