Upgrade current account from basic account

I have a basic cashcard current account and want to upgrade it to an account with the facilities i.e. cheque book and debit card. I have 2 settled defaults on my credit file. One with MNBA that will disappear from the file in June of this year and the other which will come off in a couple of years. Because of these historic defaults I think my request to upgrade my account has been refused.

Any suggestions anyone as what I can do to get round this? I always thought that as long as defaults were marked as settled, they would be held against you.

Any advice offered would be most welcome!

Many basic accounts come with Visa Electron or Solo 'debit' card: https://www.justabank.co.uk/pdfs/bank-account-guide.pdf

hi i opened a basic account with lloyds around 2 yrs ago, (a joint account) they have upgraded me to a current with cheque book and debit card, they said that once we had the account with them they only do internal credit checks and go by how you are running your account in order to upgrade you. Im no angel and have been overdrawn loads and had a few bounced cheques but they still upgraded me, and i dont work i just get tax credits and child benefit paid into one account and husbands wages paid into the other. so maybe you could open a basic account there and say after 6months see if they will upgrade you?

Which bank are you with FP?

  • Thanks for your responses guys.

I currently bank with Nationwide who have been less than sympathetic, helpful you name it! Until I told them to stop they thought nothing of sending me their marketing rubbish every other day! Not good enough for one of their grown up current accounts but good enough to buy their insurance though! Well they can think again! I will stick with them until I can get a proper account elsewhere and then they can consider themselves dumped!

vodkaqueen75 thanks for the tip - I think I will open a basic account with them and give it a few months and hopefully they will be more sympathetic.

Good luck to all of you with your finances!

    Hi,

My wife is in the same situation with Halifax, she has a basic Cardcash account and she wanted to upgrade it to a student current account. Just received a letter today saying she has been refused, she has never had any loans or debts?

She previousely opened a joint current account with me with them, so I don't see what the problem is?

Does anyone know the Halifax guidelines?

You say that she wants a Student account.
Is she studying for an Honours degree? Is this her first year of study?
Not many courses start in Feb/March so they may think she has an existing account elswhere.

Halifax are a bit strange like that, I got a loan for 3k from them last year, which was approved and a Credit card which was intrest free for 12 months also approved.

They then tried to sell me a current account and I said yes and got refused!

They had to put a referal in for me and the account then got accepted.

If you manage your current account online with Lloyds and pay in £1000 per month then you can upgrade it to the current account plus. You get 4% interest on balance. Simple as hitting the button to upgrade account online and its instant.
