Useless Bl00dy Hands!!!

Hi All
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, please move if necessary, but I am on a tight budget and hoping to mine the huge amount of knowledge that is displayed on this board daily.]:D

I wonder if any of you can help me. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands which makes 'chopping' fruit & veg a real chore. I have 2 birds that need to have fruit & veg cut up for them and wondered if any of you wonderful OS'ers knew of any electric/battery powered machines that would do the job. I have tried JML's nicer dicer, but it needs an awful lot of pressure for hard things and seems to mash soft fruit into a pulp!
Many thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about your hands, RA is a horrible condition.

If the veg is hard have you thought about sticking it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it up?

I use a Marco Pierre White mini food processor. It's good for chopping and blending small amounts of food.

Would it be possible to get someone to chop a large quantity of fruit/veg for you and then you could bag them up and freeze them, just defrosting a little at a time for day-to-day use?

  • Same problem here. Before you dash out and buy one have a look at amazon - they have some powered peelers. I can't say anything about them as I haven't tried them (thinking about it). You can also get other things that may help - I have a battery can opener. It may be worth talking to an occupational therapist (through the council) they are terrific people and can show you all sorts of things you hadn't thought of. As a last resort I have a Magimix its good but it can't do everything.
    Best wishes

Unfortunately Im with you there too.

Would probably suggest the food processor, my mum has one with a chopper action on it.

I find it also helps if I can sit down and rest my arms on the table or something similar.................though actually dont listen to me, this is from the girl who has had about 30ish stitches in the last year from chopping veg! :rotfl:
Its hard to wait around for that something you know may never happen, but its harder to give up when you know its everything you ever wanted.........

People tell me Im going the wrong way..............when its simply a way of my own!
  • Just a thought LoopyLinz do you have a 'perching' stool? I have one -and would love to use it more, but my kitchen is just so tiny. (Got it from the occupational therapist).

I got myself a folding bar stool to sit on when my back is hurting. My kitchen is pretty narrow so it means I can fold it up and store it out of the way when I'm not using it.
