Managers Job...

I've applied internally for a Managers job.. I have my interview on Monday (only set the application off yesterday!!!). Anyways.. it would be my first time im such a role, I don't have a problem with it (I'm half doing it anyway!!!).. but I just don't have the jargon to throw around in the interview and role play!!

Is there any good resources I can use this weekend to help me???!

I'm up againg 4 external people and 1 has already had an interview! I'm not the best in these situations as I just get nervous other what they are gonig to say to me!!!

Thanks!

Remeber firstly manager or not everyone gets dresse4d the same way in the morning :-) secondly just be yourself, put over your good points and also mention some of your failings and anything you ahve done to address these issues. use the fact that your almost currently doing the role and you would see it as good carear progression and development of your carear to move Forward, advises this would also allow progression of other staff into your existing role :-)

And if that fails .... you at least gave it your best.

    Try https://www.businessballs.com
loads of info about what people want to hear!!
    Good luck
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.
  • If you're already half doing the job you're in a strong position.
At interview try and emphasise all the tasks/projects you've managed to a succesful outcome; what currently under utilised skills would flourish in a managment role; which skills you would like to improve (don't mention failings!) and how the company would support you; your ability to lead and understand the value of teamwork. And if you have someone on the panel who asks for an example of something that went wrong and what you did about it - make sure you give a good solid answer. Good luck.

If you mean that you're the only applicant from within the company/firm.......then you already have an advantage over the external candidates. Your company/firm already knows how reliable and loyal you are......apart from any other qualities you show.;)

Prepare your answers as much as you can.

    Good luck.

  • If you can get your hand on a copy of Raving Fans or Gung Ho! written by Ken Blanchard, I would read it. It will only take you half a day, Gung Ho! especially is very readable and is very inspirational. It is all about how to manage a team and motivate them properly.

Alternatively he writes a book call One Minute Manager.

The books should give you some confidence in terms of management techniques.

Ken writes a lot of books about management without it becoming a text book.

    Good luck

Have answers ready for these 2 questions

What is the greatest success you have had in managing someone (or in managing a project)? What have you learnt from this?

Could you tell us about a time when things didn't go right? What happened and what did you learn from this?

These are about the most standard management questions in the world. By the way, if you aren't asked what you learnt from a situation, tell them anyway :D
