Have to say that Ive always shied away from extended warranties but I had a dishwasher that packed up a month after the initial year warranty. Local bloke charged £60 to come out and tell me its a common fault, the part will be about £150. So £210 for something which may go wrong pretty quickly again. I bit the bullet and bought a new, better quality (AEG) washer.

It made me think about my other appliances like the SMEG fridge freezer which is a work of art but a pain in the butt according to all the sites. £1200, would I want to have to pay out that again. Domgen did contact me about a number of my items as Id had a big new kitchen extension and I turned them down but after the dishwasher experience I contacted them and got insurance on my range cooker, fridge freezer and AEG washer dryer for 5 years cover including accidental damage. And a full replacement if the machine cant be fixed.

It seems a huge amount of money - about £200 on each item, but considering the cheapo dishwasher was going to cost that for just one repair ............Ive gone with it and at least it will take the worry out of things going wrong and OH fiddling with them for a couple of weeks before he gives up and I have to get someone in anyway (I never want to spend another 4 weeks queueing in a laundrette again, which is what happened with the last washer/drier when it packed up!) If it give you peace of mind its worth it considering the call out charge alone will be £60 or more each time.

Personally I beleive that all these extended warrantties are a con. If you took one out for all your appliances (FF,cooker, washing machine, dishwasher, boiler, TV, video etc etc) you would be paying out more in a year than any oner (or two) items cost.
Put the money aside in another account and when something breaks either get it repaired using this money or replace it. Most domestic appliance parts that fail are not 100s of pounds , many just a few pence or a few pounds and using local companies/engineers for the work is good for both your bank balance , the local community and the local economy.

I haven't taken one out for all my appliances I've taken one out for the bargain £54 for 2 years. That's just 50p a week and I've paid £50 for a repair man to come out, look at my old FF and say it was beyond economic repair!

On my old cooker, which gave good service, I asked a local repairer for a new oven seal for my oven and he quoted me £55:eek: . I sourced one via ebay for £15 and changed it but not everyone can do this.

Then there was my gas fire. 2 year old and broke down. Cost of replacement part and callout £129 and I could have covered it for 12 months for £89.

Extended warranties have to be an informed decision and you weigh up the cost v cost of probable repair. I know for £54 it makes sense as one repair will be more than that and I'm covered for numerous repairs for 2 years.

My new TV wanted £150 to cover it for 5 years which I feel is way too much and I've been informed when it gets to 12 month old I'll be made an offer to cover it for much less so I'll bide my time and see what comes.

  • As i have mentioned in previous posts i have a Washer Dryer ,AEG (you know the trusted quality german make . . . . . . . . . . . . . .now mainly built in the far east!)
Anyway, I insured said item with Domgen. I'm not sure why as i have never insured any item before? That said it costs me £6 per month to insure and so far up to now in three years the repair bill is over £3K!
Give them their dues, they won't write it off they just keep fixing it!

So what i am trying to say is, It's luck of the draw, to insure or not to insure!

Oh gawd Ben, thats what I have too :)

Domgen say they will replace it if its beyond economical repair if you take out insurance before the appliance is a year old?

Yeah so they say. As I have mentioned the repairs to date are over 3K. One of my recent repairs (about 7-8 Months ago) came in at over £800 (eight hundred)!!!!!!!

Now the machine only cost between 6 and 7 hundred in the first place and you can get a replacement cheaper than that now!

From what i can gather reading between the lines of what the repairman said, insurance write offs go against the manufacturer in some way shape or form??? Not that i have seen any listings for companys with relevance to the longevity of their products!

After having my appliance repaired on wednesday the repairer informed me i have been unlucky as he hardly ever fixes these machines!

As far as i can make out i am very unlucky as it is never the same part twice with exeption of the drum.

I have had; damaged drum, ceased drum, cracked outer drum x 2, circuit board fail, new water pump, new door lock & more i cant remember!

I can't say yours will be the same but i think £6 per month is worth it!!

I asked about their replacement issue and they said they issue vouchers to the value of the goods from a store of their choice or I can take a cash offer and purchase myself. They did say I would be responsible for delivery costs.

My AEG washing machine, bought in 2005 for £450+ has just been written off by Domestic & General. I have paid £210 in total for extended warranty. I'd expected an AEG machine to last longer than 4 years (my previous Hoover WM lasted 16 years!) so I was very pleased I had taken out the extended warranty.

I've been told that I have £125 to pay before they will order my new WM; £60 is the remainder of the policy (fair enough) as I pay by d/debit and £65 is delivery. I will be advised of a delivery date within 48 hours of the order being placed. Considering I could order this same item online from any number of retailers with FREE, next day delivery, I think their £65 charge is out or order. When I told them that, standard reply is "that's what the manufacturer charges us". When I asked if I could arrange purchase with a supplier of my choice, I was told "only if we can't offer you an alternative, then we'd give you vouchers to spend at Comet but they would take much longer to organise".

I strongly object to such a hefty delivery charge and would have thought that getting so much business from Domestic & General, they would be able to offer a better deal; my suspicion is this is just a way to claw back more money.

    Not happy!

One of my sisters always buys "quality" electrical items and has paid almost £1000 for her last 3 built in ovens. She has gone through 3 of them while I'm only on my second and I've spent £1000 on two. She is now coming around to my way of thinking of not spending so much you are gutted when it breaks down.

Just to update this thread. I am so glad I have my extended warranty. The freezer door came off in my hands today as a pin is broken. Rang and an engineer will call plus any spoilt food is covered.
